MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MENSWEAR

NAME: Jerry van Vorstenbos aka @vorstenbos
AGE: 27
LOCATION: Nijmegen, Holland
OCCUPATION: Store manager of Levi’s Arnhem & Levi’s Nijmegen
HOBBY: Levi’s, Insta, painting (see some of Jerry’s work further down)

1. So Why Instagram?

In spring 2014 I started working with Instagram. A colleague of mine advised me to use Instagram so I could share my passion for denim and especially Levi’s Vintage Clothing. Since then I’ve been hooked to Insta, making it a big part of my daily life.

2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?

My interest for denim, boots and workwear started when I began to work for Levi’s 4 years ago. Before that I didn’t pay that much attention to clothing. Now, clothes are a big part of my life and they represent who I really am.

3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?

I think it’s really cool that the stuff you’re interested in can all be found in one place. It makes it easier and more accessible for a lot of people. I must honestly say that I don’t follow a lot of fashion brands, my Insta feed is all about nature, motorcycles, tattoos and real people in real clothes. It is a fun way to meet new people who also like the same stuff you’re into. I think through Insta I can go all over the world and crash at someone’s house who I have met via the love for denim on this social network.

4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?

I think everyone can guess that the number one for me is Levi’s Vintage Clothing. My whole closet is 98% LVC. The only things not Levi’s are:

1 RRL cap
1 Filson jacket
1 Lee anniversary jean
1 Denham Jean
2 Wrangler Blue Bell jackets
1 Edwin x Jofama jacket

My go-to brands are:
1 Levi’s vintage clothing
2 Red Wing
3 Chuck Taylor All Stars

5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands?

1 Levi’s Kammenstraat, Antwerp. They sell LVC and Made and Crafted.
2 Ebay, worldwide.

Whenever I go city tripping, or just plain old shopping with my girlfriend, I always do some research if the city sells the brands I’m interested in. It is not fun to shop with me because I almost only wear LVC and that is just hard to find in Holland.

6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your clobber on social media?

It just grew on me. I started out doing some details pics of my shoes and my clothing and all of a sudden I started to notice I was getting more and more likes. Then I started to pay attention to other “Instagrammers” and I started to get inspiration on how to make it my own. Some of the ideas worked better than others, but I think the stuff I do now works for me and my followers, 2 or 3 outfits grids and then a picture of myself…and so on.

7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?

Most importantly is an eye for detail and your surroundings. That is where I see a lot of Instagrammers trying, but not pulling it off. I moved a few months’ back and when I saw the floor that I now walk on I could not be happier, way better than my last one, the wood on the ground really makes my images pop and it enhances the vibe. My next favourite spot is in front of our indigo door as it’s like a picture frame. My style, I would describe, mostly as western wear, goes hand-in-hand with nature and luckily my folks own a house in the woods. I pay really close attention to what I post and where I (or my girlfriend, who has a name: Kate) takes the picture. I take Insta pretty seriously, because it is also some sort of hobby for me nowadays. It is a fun way to archive your own collection, but is also some sort of reflection for who you are.

8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?

Like in the LVC lookbook: real folks in real clothes.

That is what I look for on Insta, for me it is important to follow guys or girls who are also collectors. I want to see pictures of people who really own the clothes, not sharing what they like, and it can be anything. Like I said, I don’t follow that much fashion on Insta.

My favourite Insta accounts are, and I know you can already guess some of them:

@olicongress
@1lrg
@ronaldvijsma
@craftedparis

And I could go on for some time, but this really sums up what Insta is all about for me. A look inside the lives of people with the same interest for the good things out there.

9. What tips would you give new starter on instagram to help them get there feed off the ground and successful?

First of all, be very clear what you stand for and what you would like to share. Try to find places, people, and other tools that help you succeed. Pay close attention to details and light and enjoy what you are doing whilst trying not to get too obsessed, ’cause nobody is paying you for it…

10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) Only with you.

What would they be? And Why?

If you say “island” I reckon it’ll be pretty damn hot out there but I’m going pretend it’s an island off the coast of Scotland, that way I can take the good stuff with me.

The jacket is definitely my 1930’s BoomTown leather coat,
Combined with a well worn pair of 1947 Levi’s 501XX,
The great 875 Red Wing Classic Moc 6” boot,
And to top it off a Cable crew in Ecru with turtleneck from LVC.

Well dressed for the weather and if I accidentally stumble in on a party I can always join the club.

Woah. Nice one Jerry! Top man!
