@cuffington answers the 10@10

Hello folks and thanks for swinging by the @clobbercalm 10@10!

Each week we ask a menswear enthusiast (the working man) 10 questions about their love for clothing and the thoughts behind their Instagram feed and yes we daily post pics of our Clobber on Instagram 😉

For this week’s feature we were lucky enough to steal an hour of Nate’s time from the feed @cuffington.

A blatant perfectionist and a very stylish cat Nate gave us a great insight into how he views his relationship with Instagram and what tricks he has up his sleeve to maintain it’s fresh, clean look.

So folks, sit back, relax and enjoy the thoughts of @cuffington.

MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MENSWEAR

NAME: Nate Ma aka @cuffington
AGE: 26
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA
OCCUPATION: Marketing Analyst

1. So Why Instagram?

Honestly, I just do it for fun. I’m a workaholic and this is just one of those things I like to do when I want to take a break and create something. I have always liked fashion. It’s a simple way to express myself and differentiate myself. Instagram has helped me share my passion and turn it into a fun digital photography project. Plus, the Instagram community is unparalleled; they continue to inspire me.

2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?

I’ve always understood quality denim to be the foundation of a great outfit. Denim has always been a staple piece in fashion and will continue to be. In addition to denim, workwear and boots also fall under a classic dress style that aren’t just a temporary fashion fad and don’t discriminate based on age. As I get older and refine my style, I gravitate towards quality pieces that are functional and only get better as the years go by. I can see myself wearing the similar outfits and dress in the same style for many years to come.

The beauty about denim, boots and workwear is that everyone is able to customize and add their own characteristics to their clothes based on how it sits on their body, and what they do in them. The scuffs and fades that come with everyday wear is what make these clothes more personal and perfect.

3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?

Everybody comes from all walks of life and not only are they super chill and friendly, they’re always willing to help and share ideas. In my opinion, Instagram nailed it by allowing your account clearly show a collection of your own photos. You really get to learn about someone’s style and their personality by scrolling through their feed. The “instafashion” community, among many others, really embraces this and is open to integrating their personalities into their photos. The result is a blend of unique, awesome people from different parts of the world who interact everyday but would have probably never known or befriended each other otherwise. It’s not just about fashion. It’s about telling – showing – your story.

4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?

Rogue Territory – This is hands down one of the first brands to actually captivate my interests in high quality workwear with their overall clean aesthetics. I was hooked when I saw Karl’s craftsmanship and attention to detail. I really admire what Karl, Leslie and the Rogue Territory team have created and thank them for the community I was exposed to through the slubfader contest.

3sixteen – Another brand with a clean look that utilizes amazing fabrics that just get better with wear. During my high school and college years, I’d save up my money to buy nice jeans. Even then, I was a young denim junkie. 3sixteen’s commitment to denim resonates with me, and love the character each of their pieces develop with more wear.

Truman Boot Company – I guess I’m a sucker for anything with dogs on it. Check out their logo! Logo aside, Truman provides sharp, clean customizable boots that are available in a nice assortment of leathers. The care they put into their boots and attention to details extend even into their awesome packaging.

5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands

I usually do the majority of my shopping online, but for an actual store, I love visiting General Quarters (see photo below). It is based near me in Los Angeles, CA. This is an awesome, spacious shop that is well curated with high quality American-made goods with a super friendly staff. Blair, Miguel, and Brian are all super approachable, friendly dudes that are extremely knowledgeable with all the products that they carry.

6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your clobber on social media?

I started my Instagram a few years back but wasn’t really that serious into it until roughly 2 years ago when I stumbled upon Rogue Territory and entered the Slub fader jean contest. At first, I wanted to use my feed to document my denim fade progressions but it slowly evolved into a complete menswear feed. I never deleted any of my older posts, so it has definitely been a fun journey, watching the progression and evolution of my own and everybody else’s feeds in the Instafashion community.

7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?

Having a second pair of hands definitely helps with creating an interesting feed because you are able to capture a bunch of different angles/shots. I come up with all the concepts and I usually ask a coworker, friend, or my girlfriend to help me with the executions of my shots. They’ll tell you I am pretty particular about how I want my photos to look, but each photographer has their own unique take, and I think that adds a nice touch to my photos. I usually take a bunch of action shots and then scrutinize them one at time to find the “perfect shot.” I wish I could tell you it was all candid! Afterwards, I edit the photo using an app like VSCO or Snapseed.

8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?

@whaleysworld @marvaments @birdgang_z are by far my top 3 favorite Instagram feeds. They have inspired me a lot.

• Brent (@whaleysworld) keeps his feed interesting with not just his stellar fashion, but also includes a variety of pictures from his weekend adventures and his awesome dog, Parker.
• Mike (@marvaments) has one of the nicest shoe collections. Mike has a great eye for design and displays his outfits and shoes with such extremely clean and crisps shots.
• Zach (@birdgang_z), a master of mixing casual, vintage, and American brands. He also has this super dark and moody feed that always catches my eye.

These guys are definitely the masters of aesthetics and on top of it, really solid people!

9. What tips would you give new starter on instagram to help them get there feed off the ground and successful?

Try to find and develop your sense of style. This should be something that represents you and something that you enjoy. You should also not be afraid to try new things every once in a while. Don’t be so focused on how many followers you have or how many likes you’re getting. People with similar tastes will notice and your followers will come. Do it because you thoroughly enjoy it. Interact with other instagrammers; ask questions, answer questions and support brands/IGers who have great products or content. Instagram has such a great platform to mingle with people who have similar interests as you. Take advantage of it!

10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) Only with you.

What would they be? And Why?

I have been mixing different brands together but lately, I’ve integrated a lot of 3sixteen pieces. It’s been great “base” pieces and I sort of build on top of that. I’m kinda late to the game, but so glad I finally got to try out 3sixteen. Anyway, my one outfit would probably consist of:

• 3sixteen – Type 3s Jacket in Shadow Selvedge
• Rogue Territory – Raw Chambray Workshirt,
• 3sixteen – St-140x – 17oz Brown Weft
• Truman Boots Co in Java Waxed Flesh

The jacket and jeans derive from just.. well, delicious denim that produce insane, high contrast fades. While the workshirt, made from such nice crunchy chambray, is the cleanest and most basic shirt that will probably never go out of style. This entire outfit is made to take a beating from everyday wear and will only get more comfortable and age beautifully.

Thanks Nate! That was awesome buddy and I hope everybody else found that as interesting as I did?
