@brandonburk… answers the 10@10

Hello folks.

I hope you’re all doing “stellar”, feeling good and confidently heading into the last weekend of August 2016.

As always welcome to clobbercalm.com, the site where (basically) we are making it our mission to find out as much as we possibly can about good, old solid menswear and, of course, the cool everyday real blokes that wear it.

As most of you know, each week we like to focus on a popular well looked after Menswear IG feed. There is something about the simplicity of Instagram that seems to make our ever growing online community seem smaller and smaller (in a good way that is).

This week is, of course, no different and lucky for us tonight’s feature focuses in on the profile of @brandonburkphotography. Not only is he a threads enthusiast but he’s also a photographer, which is mega as it means all the pics used during the feature will look bang on! 😉

Folks. Sit Back. Relax and enjoy the thoughts of @brandonburkphotography as he answers the @clobbercalm 10@10.

MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MENSWEAR

NAME: Brandon Burk aka @brandonburkphotography
AGE: 30
LOCATION: Salt Lake City, Utah
OCCUPATION: Photographer
WEBSITE: www.brandonburkphotography.com

1. So Why Instagram?

I have always loved creating. Instagram is the perfect way for sharing my creativity to the world. I also love being able to see what others are creating. Instagram has been a great way to improve and sharpen my photography skills. I am able to analyze which photographs my following like best and continue to create imagery based around that.

2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?

One of the things I love most about rugged attire is its ability to tell its own story. Where its been and what it has gone through. I love telling my own story through the fade of my denim or the patina on my boots. I also enjoy the fact that it is acceptable to have a pair of beat up boots or worn out denim. Everywhere I photo, rugged attire comes with.

3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?

I think it is great. Each style of fashion has created its own community. I enjoy being a part of the rugged style community on Instagram. I have learned of great brands that I may have not heard of otherwise.

4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?

Freenote Cloth – I love their exclusivity. You can’t just go find them in a department store. Their denim and shirts fit to perfection. Andrew and his brother Matt take great pride in being an American made brand. I’ve worked a bit with Andrew, he is one of the best businessmen I have ever met. His company provides exceptional customer service.

Hold Fast Gear – I use their photography gear almost every single day. Their bags are amazing and their products are very innovative. HoldFastGear.com

Pendleton Woolen Mills – I love wearing their flannel shirts. I can wear anything in their menswear department. Buffalo check and Aztec/Southwestern patterns are some of my favorite to wear.

Honorable Mention: Thursday Boot Company, Stock and Barrel, Mercy Supply Co, Red Clouds Collective, Filson, Pointer Brand, Bradley Mountain, Grant Stone, Bryer Leather, Lm Products, Ewing Dry Goods, Go Forth Goods, Vermilyeapelle, Sanborn Canoe, Silver Piston, Benjamin Bott, Railcar Fine Goods.

5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands

I generally buy them all directly from the source.

6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your clobber on social media?

I first started my account showcasing some of my scenic and portraiture work. As I continued to spend more time on Instagram I started to network and follow other people posting their sense of style and threads. It slowly evolved into me starting to do the same thing.

7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?

Lighting is the most important thing to me. I love to incorporate reclaimed wood with my imagery. I take all my photographs using a Canon 5D Mark III and I tether it to my phone using a device @outlinedcloth introduced me to called CamRanger. I am always paying attention to what images my following like most. I take a mental note and try to create more similar content. I also like to pay attention to detail.

8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?

@whaleysworld Brently is a legend. @thepacman82 Phil does epic flat lay imagery. @kjp I love his lifestyle imagery. @kylefinndempsey Amazing drone imagery, tones and mood. @jeffdepano One of my early supporters. @inn8chiro Love seeing his Alden footwear collection. @shortstache Some of the most amazing scenic images I have ever seen. @corymahlke I love his originality, he is the one and only. @everydaydrew Great mix of bags, boots, and Milwaukee scenery.

9. What tips would you give new starter on instagram to help them get there feed off the ground and successful?

Stick with it. Be real, be you. It takes time to develop a following, be patient. Pay attention to detail.

10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) Only with you.

What would they be? And Why?

I am going to revise the question to “if I were standard somewhere with cold climate”.

I would take a pair of Freenote Cloth raw denim, Red Wing Boots, Pendleton Flannel and my Filson bag.

Brandon, thank you for your time boss. This week has been tip top and the pics you allowed us to use are just WHOA! You’re a talent my friend and a true gent.

Next week we have Drew aka @everydaydrew. It never ceases to amaze me how humbling, polite, generous and all-round good the blokes are that hang within our little Insta community and Drew is absolutely no different.

If you’re a regular visitor to his feed then you will know he has been on his travels lately and with that happening plus an unfortunate laptop theft (gutted for you Drew) his feature has been a little while in the making…but holy heck it’s worth the wait!

As always it goes live next Thursday at 10pm GMT. Hopefully we will catch you all then.

Have a great weeken…….oh wait, one last thing! I nearly forgot (I didn’t really) that in September we will be launching an additional series to the ClobberCalm blog. It’s called “THE BRANDS BEHIND MENSWEAR“ *see what we have done there* 🙂

So moving forward, on a Thursday it will be “THE MEN BEHIND MENSWEAR“ feature and on a Monday evening we will be focusing on the brands. I hope you continue to enjoy this 10@10 series as much as we do!

Have a cracking weekend Folk! YOLO.

See you all soon!
Ben @clobbercalm.
