I hope you’re all doing stellar and getting used to the chilly mornings (if you’re in my neck of the woods that is).
It’s been a top week so far for the 10@10 series as Erik from @starkmade put in an excellent performance when the spotlight was on him last Monday.
To top the week off, tonight, we have Richard aka @doppki. Richard is a first team player for the IG denim, leather and boots community. Constantly providing us with top class shots of his daily threads he averages 85.5 followers per post. That’s impressive and a testament to this guy’s threads and style. It’s top stuff!
MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MENSWEAR
NAME: Richard aka @doppki
LOCATION: Arlington, VA
1. So Why Instagram?
It all started with me looking at my girlfriend’s (now fiancé) Instagram and seeing some of the Instagram accounts she followed (@extrapetite and @wendyslookbook) and thinking, “man, I could do that!” I guess you can say that a lot of this has been prompted by the women in my life. First my sister who got me thinking about fashion and helping my dress “well” back when I was in High School, and then my fiancé’s interest in following fashion Instagrammers and me happenstancing upon her feed. Of course, now that I’ve been doing it for almost six months, I enjoy the nice break from the hustle and bustle of my daily job, although at times keeping my Instagram updated feels like a second job!
2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?
While it’s hard to pinpoint what exactly attracts me to denim, boots, and the rugged look, I think part of it stems from my own personality. I take commitments seriously and like to see things through to its end, whether it’s work, tasks, relationships, etc. In that sense, I like the fact that a pair of raw denim literally becomes yours over time, whether it’s the fit or fades, no pair will be the same. Same thing with a pair of boots–the scuffs and patina that shows on some leather boots tells a different story for every wearer.
3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?
I think Instagram is a great platform, especially for fashion. It provides a quick snapshot of someone’s sense of fashion and style. As well, it’s so convenient to interact with others and ask questions about fit, quality, comparisons with other items, that it often times can be so much more helpful than the information listed on the product’s description. Of course, nothing beats going into your local store and trying things on yourself.
4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?
@3sixteen – I’m a recent convert of 3sixteen, having bought my first item of theirs last year–the ST-140x, Brown Weft Heavyweight Denim. While their attention to detail is on point and the quality of their garments is top-notch, for me its really been the fit. A good fitting jean or shirt goes a long ways towards being confident in how you look, and for me they fit perfectly. Finally, I admire their statement on how faith has guided their business from day one and the attitude of ‘the last shall be first.’
@tannergoods – I purchased my first quality leather good from them back in 2011. I have been impressed with how it has aged over the last five years and how soft and supple the leather has become. Better with age!
@redwingheritage – My first pair of goodyear welt leather boots. As the saying goes, you’ll always remember your first. I like that they have a wide selection of boots and colors, many of which can easily be both dressed up with, or dressed down.
5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands?
As a Seattle native, I’m partial to Blue Owl Workshop, Jay, and the excellent crew he has out there (shout-out to Alex and his dedication to that pair of Naked and Famous overalls). Visiting Jay and his shop back in the day when he was still operating out of his home, truly gave me an appreciation for what goes into the construction of quality denim, the unique details that set apart various brands, and the different experience that each pair of denim goes through–depending on the wearer, the environment, the activities, etc. To top it off, they have a lot of great programs such as the Denim Buyback Program and the Blue Owl Points system. You can find both 3sixteen and Tanner Goods at their store. For Red Wing boots, there’s so many stores that carry them that there is no one place that I go to for them.
6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your clobber on social media?
As I mentioned above, it really was just an offspring of me checking out what was on my fiancé’s Instagram feed sometime last year and then finally deciding to start something earlier this year. Of course, as I’ve begun to do it and being in the community, I’ve enjoyed interacting amongst the relatively small community of denim heads and wearers of quality goods.
7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?
While I think it would be a stretch to say that my images are great, nevertheless a lot of the photos I take are done by myself with a tripod and a wireless remote control. It takes a lot of trial and error, and a lot of redundant photos to ensure I get at least one photo I like. Since I do have a day job, most of my photos are taken during the afternoons after work and during the weekends. I would love to go explore and go on hikes more often for more scenic photos, all the other things in my life prevent me from dedicating too much time in exploring new places. With that said, I have to give huge credit to my fiancé (soon to be called my Instagram-wife) who does take a lot of photos for me when we are together–whether it’s on the way to dinner, at a park, at a random road-stop, etc., she patiently puts up with how picky I can be with shot selection. As far as capturing the “magic,” honestly I really can’t tell sometimes what people may or may not enjoy, I just try to keep a consistent feed with some flat lays and close-up shots, mixed in with all the lifestyle photos.
8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?
I took a look at all the other 10@10 interviews and decided to mention some feeds that no one else has mentioned since I think giving these lesser known feeds some attention is a benefit to all of us!
– @RVAman, I may be partial because he’s just down the I-95 in Richmond, Virginia, but I like his super chill and personal feed. I don’t know why, but his feed just gives off the vibe of a super friendly guy with some quality gear. Having a shiba in his photos may or may not be awesome as well.
– @nifty_wowo, he’s got his own store I believe (Niftydo in Vancouver, Canada), but his photos are sometime hilarious and he’s got a good sense of humor. Love seeing him showcase all the new threads he gets to the store!
– @Isaiah_Joe313, I love seeing his shot selection, they are always so clean. I think what draws me to a lot of his photos are how they are so simple, and yet have so much depth to them.
9. What tips would you give new starters on Instagram to help them get there feed off the ground and successful?
Just do it. While it probably would be good to think through what your vision is for your Instagram, the style, content, etc. sometimes you just need to get your feet wet in order to go all-in. I was like that. I didn’t really have any vision for my Instagram other than posting some photos of my raw denim, and after some time I began to realize what I wanted in my Instagram and focused it over time. It’s a continual process–the cool thing is seeing the progress you’ve made from the beginning.
10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) Only with you.
What would they be? And Why?
I tend to like a fairly simple style. Although I definitely appreciate a thoughtfully put-together outfit with all the bells and whistles of layering and accessories, I would wear a nice pair of raw denim and a clean tee everyday if I could. As such, a desert island for me beckons:
– 3sixteen st-140x because I still want to get some sick fades even when stranded on a desert island!
– 3sixteen heavyweight tee because it might get cold in the evenings.
– Redwing Heritage Beckmans because I need some comfortable, rugged, and good looking boots to scour the island for meat to eat.
– American Trench mil-spec sport socks because it’s going to get real nasty up in there over time, and I need some silver in my socks to keep the bacteria away!
Richard that was awesome buddy. Such a cool read and thanks for taking the time out to share your views with us bro!
It’s great to hear you’re a big fan of the boys at @3sixteen because Andrew (Co-Owner) has taken some time out of his mad-busy day to answer the 10@10 for us here at @clobbercalm. It’s such a good read and what an incredible company they are.
The @3sixteen feature goes live on Monday at 10pm GMT as always and it’s a must-read for anybody that has even the slightest interest in denim so don’t miss out!
Also next week (oh it’s a busy one) we have the first @clobbercalm collection going live and available to buy right here on the site. @clobbercalm teamed up with some amazing USA based companies who’s sole focus is to hand-make amazing leather and denim goods that last a lifetime, and tell a story, for everyday they are loved. With this in mind we are going to shoot a one-off feature out on Tuesday just so you guys can get to know the companies involved and also learn why we love their products so much. In my opinion these guys are the ‘Sex Pistols’ of the fashion industry and we should all pay attention.
Next Thursday’s ‘Man Behind The Menswear’ sees us chat to Johan aka @johanmalik80. He’s a super cool dude with a great enthusiasm for menswear. It’s a privilege to have him join the ever-growing @clobbercalm library.
Well sorry for rambling on but plenty to mention this evening!
Have a cracking final few steps towards the weekend people and feel free to reach out anytime. I’m always game for a chinwag…
