@ottonomous1 answers the 10@10

Hello folks.

I hope you’re all stellar? This week we have Mr Carey Otto aka @ottonomous1, a denim loving Minnesotan and a frequent poster to the IG denim and boot community. He’s got a great eye for details and it’s great to have him take the hot-seat for us on the 10@10.

Sit back, relax, crack open a beer and enjoy the thoughts of @ottonomous1 as Carey Otto answers the @clobbercalm 10@10.

MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MENSWEAR

NAME: Carey Otto aka @ottonomous1
AGE: 38
LOCATION: Minneapolis, MN
OCCUPATION: Corporate Compliance & Ethics – Target Corp

1. So Why Instagram?

As I started using Facebook I began to realize that I was only communicating with the same people that I have had in my circle for most of my life. It seemed odd that I was using this vehicle to stay in touch with people that I spoke to each day and spent my weekends with. I got bored with it quickly and began to use Instagram. I immediately recognized that Instagram was connecting me with likeminded individuals, manufacturers and craftsmen from around the globe and created so many opportunities to meet others that shared my passions. I thank Instagram every day for introducing me to some of my best friends and for showing me just how small this world can actually be.

2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?

Red Wings have been in my life since before I can remember. My mother brought me home from the hospital in a pair of crocheted 875’s! My grandfather was a pilot, mechanic (auto, airplane and motorcycle), hunter and fisherman and I never once saw him without a pair of Red Wings on his feet. Being that Red Wings are manufactured in my home state I am proud of their tradition and honoured to carry on their place in my family tree.

As for denim and workwear I have always appreciated how clothing responds to use and abuse. I believe in investing in quality pieces and learning just how well they hold up or distress. The patina that quality items show after years of wear are a novel in themselves. The patina tells a story about the owner that only their faces and hands are otherwise capable of delivering.

3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?

I think that the use of Instagram for fashion is an incredible thing! Each day I wake up to individuals showing the world their creative expression and freedom. This educates others and influences them to take more challenges and break the confines or conventions of their closets and of what most people think is normal. I also appreciate the exposure that small craftsmen and manufacturers receive from across the globe. I have met so many incredible people and their brands since joining Instagram that I never would have otherwise known about.

4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?

Apolis & Barbour – Close tie on the jackets. Barbour for nasty days and Apolis for everything else!

Baldwin – Some of my favourite denim. My first pair and I have been through so much (run over by a truck, countless concerts/music festivals, bicycle crashes, hikes in the mountains, etc) and they keep coming back! I now have three pairs in rotation…

Taylor Stitch – Their shirting fits me so well and the details are incredible!

5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands?

We have some wonderful shops in the Twin Cities. My favourites are BlackBlue St Paul, Martin Patrick and Askov Finlayson. I order my Taylor Stitch items from their website and I take advantage of their Workshop program where you can save quite a bit by contributing to their finding campaigns.

6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your clobber on social media?

Sometime 5-6 years ago my employer initiated a change in their dress code policy and I was able to arrive to work in clothes that were much more “me”. After a couple of weeks others began to encourage me to begin a fashion blog but I did not think that I had the time to devote to that so I began to post to Instagram. The rest is history!

7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?

No secrets really. Just a total lack of shame in setting up my phone in random areas to capture images of myself using the timer. I used to be embarrassed by this but now it is just considered a part of my day! I typically take a photo before I arrive to work and post that on my morning commute. I switched careers a little over two months ago and I have not found the same number of quality locations as my previous employer had to offer but my parking lot shots should get me to this fall but I am not sure what I will do this winter without the sun in the morning!

8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?

You have already covered so many of my friends and favourites; @bothrops1 and @inn8chiro have become great friends of mine and have amazing feeds, @julienlanda is simply a master and @outlinedcloth is killing it out west. Some of my other favourite accounts and people I speak with almost daily are @lico234, @vonabiszett, @jjayhawks and @bvo_66.

9. What tips would you give new starters on Instagram to help them get there feed off the ground and successful?

Be yourself and find a signature shot. Remember that this is for you to express yourself so do not feel pressured to represent yourself as anything other than the authentic “you”. Be proud of yourself and do not compare yourself to others. Lastly; have fun with this! Why else would you be using Instagram..?

10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) Only with you.

What would they be? And Why?

Assuming this deserted island has a cool climate I am going with a pair of Red Wing 877’s and Baldwin Samuel jeans. I have been to hell and back with both of them so I am confident that they will take care of me under these circumstances. A Taylor Stitch chamois flannel shirt would be a most comfortable layer and my Barbour International would be armour against the elements. The shell would keep me dry and the snap-in sherpa vest would give me some flexibility for weather changes.

Corey, bro, congrats! You’re the first dude to take a Barbour piece to the island with you, a British company swell *thumbs up*

Next Monday we have a real treat. Karl from Rogue Territory aka @rgt agreed to slide his views onto the 10@10 platform for us. As you probably all know @rgt are really pushing the boundaries in the world of modern-day raw denim fashion. Many of their key lines carry huge popularity within the worldwide denim community and, as always, Karl’s thoughts go live at 10pm on Monday.

Then we pile straight into next Thursday when New Yorker Mr K. Bash aka @illbash becomes the man behind the menswear. You can see an incredibly organised feed at @illbash so check it out and drop it a follow folks as next week Mr Bash answers the 10@10.

Have a top weekend peeps!

Ben @clobbercalm.

  1. It does seem a little odd that they nitpick so much about the reading, instead of appreciating the Contuittsion's precious content. Surely John Lewis' reading of the 13th amendment was a tender moment in anybody's book.
