An introduction to PT&F17

Hello folks.

It’s Saturday and it’s 10am! Yup we’re busting out a Saturday morning post and not without good reason. Ya see for me it’s currently 12.20am on Tuesday 3rd Jan. The kids have managed to stay asleep, and I’m about to crack open my 4th bottle of Bud to celebrate this small success (shit changes when bambinos start arriving) so I’m taking advantage and blasting out as much content as possible…

Here goes, ‘You Can Do It’ by Ice Cube is beating through my new Crimbo headphones and I’m wondering what it is I should do to help us all get a good understanding of what project #threadsandfades2017 is and why the hell we are doing it. Ok here goes; so the reason I’m doing it is because I love shit that ages well, always have done, I’m a true patina dreamer as are many other dudes out there. Shit that gets old and wears just looks cool to me, so I set out to document a project that does just that…enter @threads.and.fades.2017.

I contacted Matt from @shockoe_atelier via Whatsapp one day when (if I’m honest) I’d sunk a few cold ones and was doing the typical ‘I’ve got a great idea so let’s write it on a beer matt’ type thing. Except instead of putting it on a beer matt I just typed it into my phone and sent it to…well, Matt of Shockoe Atelier of course. It wasn’t completely weird as Matt had bought some @glassonionvintageltd vintage Levi’s from me after we did the 10@10, but I imagine it still came slightly out of the blue. “Hey Matt, can you donate 5 pairs of jeans please to this idea I have? I want to put them on 5 guys and document everything they do for a full year!” Safe to say that when I woke up the next morning I felt a little sheepish about my previous night’s “big idea”…

To my surprise Matt agreed and said he would support the project 100%. WOW! I had a company that makes the best raw denim fits I had ever seen (some of those Shockoe jackets though??) on board. Nice one and we’re off! Gotta do it now so I contacted my brother from another mother @clobbercalm.cal, a true friend of mine who holds the backbone of everything we do together here on clobbercalm.com with his design, technology and, well, grammar & spelling skills and told him we had new groove for 2017! Luckily he loved it and so here we are.

So let’s meet the guys that have committed to project #threadsandfades2017 and find out why they have even given us the time of day.

MEET THE GUYS BEHIND PT&F17

1. Firstly, @sel.vage, where are you currently situated and what’s your profession? Where will the denim be going each day?

Jens from Mainz, Germany and I’m a specialist nurse for Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. I’ll be wearing them on my way to work (unfortunately I can’t wear them at work ) and back home 😉 I’ll try to give them as many hours as possible during my leisure time and Denims are my sweatpants at home anyway 😂

2. It’s a pleasure to have you on board team #threadsandfades2017 but what made you say yes to this project in the first place?

I can’t say “no” to a new pair of these outstanding jeans. I’m so curious to see if the new ones will fade differently than my first pair of Slim Kojimas.

3. Finally, is there anything you would like to say or maybe let us know going into this project?

I need a second pair of legs 😉 I’m so happy that Ben asked me to team up with these 4 fantastic guys.

1. Firstly, @rickisamhall, where are you currently situated and what’s your profession? Where will the denim be going each day?

Ricki Hall, 29, live in Crystal Palace. I’m a model, Actor, DJ and male grooming collaborator. The denim will be going with me everywhere. I’m treating these as my second skin. I’m going out on a high-ask here but I’ve vowed to wear these Shocks every single day no matter where I am or what I’m up to. They will be on set with me most of the time or in airports as that’s where I am the majority of the time. We have just bought a house so I’ll be doing all the removal, painting, decorating, IKEA furniture building 😉 in these chaps.

2. It’s a pleasure to have you on board team #threadsandfades2017 but what made you say yes to this project in the first place?

I actually started something similar last year with Nudie jeans, got a few months into the project and something happened and I lost the jeans, long story haha 😂

I’ve been following @clobbercalm for a while now and love his feed, his rawness and artistic flare for denim and the articles of clothing that flirts with denim. So, it just made sense to get on board and also see how jeans react and age differently with people from all walks of life. I find the aging of clothing super interesting and beautiful.

3. Finally, is there anything you would like to say or maybe let us know going into this project?

I won’t be holding back on stories or what’s happened to the jeans. Some stories will 100% be tongue in cheek and a little crude, but hey, we all love a smutty story now and then. 👌🏽

1. Firstly, @johanmalik80, where are you currently situated and what’s your profession? Where will the denim be going each day?

I’m Johan Malik, from Jakarta – Indonesia. My profession work in the family company, oil and gas. Denim has become a part of my life the last 5 years. Wherever I go I always wear them even during sleep haha…I almost never wear slacks, except when attending formal occasions such as weddings. In the mines’ I always feel very comfortable wearing them, because that’s where I can feel like a real man!

2. It’s a pleasure to have you on board team #threadsandfades2017 but what made you say yes to this project in the first place?

I accept this project because I like denim, and the big thing in my mind is that no one has ever made an event/project like this before, it’s amazing. I am very grateful to my best friend Ben who has given me the opportunity to get involved in this event/project, and also to @shockoe_atelier, for supporting us. So many denim lovers of this world, but only five of us were given the opportunity to do the event/project #threadsandfades2017, an honor and proud moment for me personally.

3. Finally, is there anything you would like to say or maybe let us know going into this project?

Only two words for this project, ‘PERFECT’ and we will make it ‘BIG’.

1. Firstly, @drmmathias, where are you currently situated and what’s your profession? Where will the denim be going each day?

I’m David Matthias and live in Midwest USA in Illinois. Most people think of Chicago when they hear “Illinois”, but I live a couple hours south of Chicago (yes there are other towns/cities/people in Illinois besides Chicago). I work in an office for my 9-5 job. I also do a lot on my small chunk of land where I live including snow removal, snow shoveling, cutting down trees, landscaping, mowing, general outdoor stuff. So this denim will see a combo of office wear (at first before it’s faded) and outside work on my land.

2. It’s a pleasure to have you on board team #threadsandfades2017 but what made you say yes to this project in the first place?

I actually noticed the project on the @clobbercalm blog in the 11/28/2016 post – I thought it was a really cool idea and I contacted @clobbercalm to see if all 5 spots were filled. Ironically, there was still one spot available and after some discussion I was added to the project – super excited to be participating. I can’t wait to see this denim fade, but overall after wearing it for over a week I’m excited about the denim in general now as well. A really nice denim so far, easy break in, and very comfortable already. Most denim doesn’t fit me right and this denim actually will not need to be altered for me to wear it comfortably which is quite rare. Classic Kojima sizing = cool.

3. Finally, is there anything you would like to say or maybe let us know going into this project?

I am fairly new to IG and have a quirky sense of humor, so please bear with me on both fronts. Love IG so far though, good pictures and quick social media comments/chats without all the political BS on some other social media outlets. In my spare time I like to spend time with the family, lift weights, get tattoos, wear awesome boots, drink beer, and eat good food. So you might see some of this sprinkled in my pictures besides denim in the office and denim outside. I appreciate the opportunity to not only participate in this project, but to also learn from the other participants and observe the evolution of the denim!

1. Firstly, @bothrops1, where are you currently situated and what’s your profession? Where will the denim be going each day?

I live and work in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I’m a biology professor at a small liberal arts university! I’m looking forward to seeing if these jeans can stand up to the rigors of professor-life! 😉

2. It’s a pleasure to have you on board team #threadsandfades2017 but what made you say yes to this project in the first place?

I’m totally humbled by the offer and grateful to be part of the gang. I first met Matt from Shockoe Atelier several years ago at a Northern Grade and then had the chance to re-connect recently at a pop-up in Minneapolis. I have several of their stellar shirts and the phenomenal denim blouson but had yet to pull the trigger on a pair of jeans. I’m ridiculously fortunate to have been asked to participate. I’m looking forward to seeing how these five pairs from across the globe evolve over the next year. The single best part about Instagram is that it allows for connections between people with common interests. I greatly appreciate the work you’ve done, Ben, to strengthen this community!

3. Finally, is there anything you would like to say or maybe let us know going into this project?

After only a few days, I’m already in love with these things. The rise and taper are perfect for how I like jeans to feel. I have several awesome pairs of jeans made from custom unsanforized denim from Cone Mills and my typical routine with a new pair is to experiment with several soaks at different temperatures. With this pair of Kojimas, I just cuffed em and started wearing them. I haven’t had a pair this slubby in years and I’ve never had denim from Collect Mills. My unofficial goal is to get around 250 days in these this year!

Awesome lads, thanks for the heads up on all the above. Short ’n’ sweet but there you have it, the stall is set, #letsdothis Project #threadsandfades2017 here we go. We will be speaking to the guys again in 3 weeks as the 28th will be the last Saturday of this month.

Again, a massive shout-out to @shockoe_atelier and all the boys we just heard from above. Hopefully we can build awareness for the independent ethical traders and create a monster to help f*ck fast fashion! Going to leave you with that thought peeps…

Have a cracking weekend and see you Monday when we sprinkle denim dust on the 10@10 with a feature from the @companiondenim guys.

So much for leaving you with that thought, two paragraphs ago, as we’ve got another little note to mention. LIVE from 2pm (UK GMT) today there will be a scattering of new product on our SHOP for you guys to peruse.

Side Note; it’s 1am, kids are still asleep, I’ve managed two features in one session and I’m actually enjoying ‘Free Falling’ by Mr. Tom Petty…she’s a good girl! 😉

Stay fun, be safe and see y’all Monday.

Ben @clobbercalm.
