@artisansofrefined… answers the 10@10

Hello people.

Glad to have you with us for another insightful instalment of ‘The Brands…’ edition of the 10@10.

So, again, this week we’re going down a different route…start-up business @artisansofrefinedworkwear get in the driving seat and tell us all about their journey to this point.

Producing high quality denim goods, proudly handmade by Filipino artisans they have got a real handle on style AND substance. They have been a pleasure to get to know through the process of putting this blog together and have been really helpful at all junctures.

To give you a flavour of them + what they are about you can read the story below about how their ‘arrow’ logo originated…

The Legend of the Three Arrows.

“Mori Motonari was a prominent daimyo in the West Chugoku region in Japan. Mori clan was under his leadership during the 16th century.

During Mori Motonari’s reign, he summoned his three sons: Mori Takamoto, Kikkawa Motoharu, and Kobayakawa Takakage. He wanted them to work together for the benefit of the Mori clan.

He asked each of his sons to snap an arrow and it easily broke. He then bundled three arrows and asked each of them to break it in half. They were unable to do so. Mori explained that one arrow can be broken with so much ease. However, three arrows, combined, was unbreakable.

It is with this inspiration that we have found our collective signature — the Three Arrowheads, one supporting the other, moving towards the same direction, upwards. An icon that symbolizes our ‘Strength in Unity.’

The Three Arrowheads represent each piece that we painstakingly produce for the modern tsuyoshi, meaning warrior and gentleman.

Thus, we call ourselves, the Artisans of Refined Workwear.”

Very cool! We can’t add anything to that; so it’s time to sit back, relax, crack open a beer and enjoy the thoughts of JJ as @artisansofrefinedworkwear answers the @clobbercalm 10@10.

MEET THE BRAND BEHIND THE MENSWEAR

NAME: JJ Lim
POSITION: Chief Connector
BRAND: Artisans of Refined Workwear
ESTABLISHED: 2016
LOCATION: Philippines
SIZE OF TEAM: 106 years worth of workwear experience
SPECIALITY/COMPANY FOCUS: Workwear

1. Straight forward, please tell us, how did your company Artisans of Refined Workwear start out? What’s the story, how and why did this sort of journey begin?

@artisansofrefinedworkwear (ARW) started as a brotherhood…

A brotherhood amongst men who enjoy fine details and utility of workwear, denim, boots, and leather. As we got further immersed into the details, we came across more brothers who lived most of their lives as expert craftsmen in their respective fields – hand-pattern and hand-cutting fabric and leather, workwear construction, and vintage machine maintenance. We put together our life-long passion for details, design, and construction to form ARW.

2. Tell us. What does a day in the life of yourself look like? What’s your daily work routine?

Busy. Heck Busy. We’re fortunate to have life-long brothers and new brothers support and appreciate our craft.

3. What do you see as being your signature item? The garment to take you forward?

We just have one fit for our jeans and trousers : Refined Tapered Fit. We developed it from ground up. We knew that we needed to recognize the requirement of the modern man – quality to last a lifetime while being relevant to the current times. The ARW Fit has a comfortable top box allowing for unrestricted movement. Smooth taper from thigh to hem for a refined form.

4. What’s your personal favourite garment when it comes to the items you offer?

The ARW Slubby Hemp 12oz jeans.

The pair starts life as an awesome slubby fabric from Amhot Mills Japan. Because of this unique cotton and hemp blend, the pair regulates body heat. At 12oz weight, they are a joy to wear. I can go all day with details; but we believe there is no better way to get full satisfaction of the applied details until you hold and wear the pair. Every single detail in the jeans has been purposefully integrated and constructed.

5. What are your thoughts on the rise of Instagram fashion and the chaps that post their clothing on there to help spread the word of their fave brands?

It’s truly community-building. We see diversity in personal choices. The appreciation of the diversity makes for an awesome community. More importantly for us, the community pushes us to be on top of our game. As it has become a truly global community, stereotypes are shattered, actual realities exist. The quality of our craft is no longer categorized by the stereotypes of where we operate, but rather through positive experiences ARW delivers to brothers all around the globe.

6. Has it made an impact on your start-up business at all, do you think?

Most definitely. We have been in contact with more than 30 unique nationalities. This is made possible by IG and truly supportive brothers all over the world.

7. Is there any feeds on IG that you particularly like to check-in on regular. What brands are you fond of on there? What menswear feeds to you like to peruse?

Oh wow. There are many – from brands to personal feeds. Allow me to state my #1 – Dr. Andrew Carr’s feed (@inn8chiro). I admire his values, commitment, and sense of style.

8. A quick one about you. Other than the business, what passions do you have in life? What flicks your switch and helps you relax?

Connecting. May it be via workwear, music, and interest in timepieces. I learn so much from so many people and experiences. What I learn, see, and hear gets applied to this interesting life.

9. What do you consider to be the best thing about your business and why?

Community-building.

More than embracing diversity and keeping global standards, we are now in a fortunate position to make a difference in the lives of more brothers. We are connecting with Habitat For Humanities to build homes. We have committed a portion of our revenues to give back and build lives.

10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) only with you. And 1 choice of drink.

What would they be? And Why?

Top: ARW WorkShirt WS7L
Jeans: ARW Slubby Hemp 12oz
Bag: Vermilyea Pelle briefcase
Boots: Alden Shell Cordovan Indys
Drink: Gatorade

The 4 items are constructed to outlive me. Will be awesome to know to what extent of beating they can handle.

Love it JJ! I think “Community-building” + “Connecting” are bang on, as that’s what makes buying artisan, quality goods so special. The feeling of being part of a group of people with a common interest i.e. a Connection, a Community. I think the product looks great and obviously all the other brothers are enjoying it too judging by the AORW IG feed…

~ Which is probably a good thing as we’re quite proud to announce that, as of tomorrow night approx. 10pm (UK GMT), we are going to be an online stockist of two of the AORW products on our SHOP site. Exciting times and stay tuned for more info ~

…thanks again for taking the time out JJ to answer our 10@10. Looking forward to speaking again soon buddy.

Thursday’s feature sees us talk to a guy (tick) who loves denim (tick) and has a fondness for Red Wings (tick) paired with Chup socks (tick). Think he will fit in just fine as @craigfrombuffalo answers the 10@10 this week.

Have a tip top week folks and stay close, below is a few things listed FYI…

1). The new product will be LIVE tomorrow night on the CLOBBERCALM STORE. Stay tuned, the independent craftsmen & woman that make our product are the real deal.

2). @threads.and.fades.2017 is starting to pick up steam so bob over and check it out.

Speak soon.

Ben @clobbercalm.
