Obviously, we already knew about the gold coming out of Brian’s workshop but it’s always nice to get that push from your audience/peers eh Brian?

Inspired by a chance visit to, his local shoe repair shop to, buy a spool of thread Brian’s life changed from that day AND anyone who has since purchased a pair of his handiwork will be thankful for that?! Developing a deep passion and obsession with the aging of leather and an intrigue for how a pair of boots can last an age Brian set a goal to dedicate his life to learn the art of boot making and produce the finest quality boots possible. With a promise, to his teacher Ignacio Palacios, to keep the trade alive, and strong, Brian instills a simple value into his craft…

“Pride Produces Quality Work.”

NAME: Brian Truong
POSITION: Owner & Operator
BRAND: Role Club
ESTABLISHED: 2010
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA
SIZE OF TEAM: 1
SPECIALITY/COMPANY FOCUS: Handcrafting Boots

1. Straight forward, please tell us, how did your company Role Club start out? (For people that don’t already know)

In high school, I was really into customizing sneakers. One day my grandma told me to go to a shoe repair down the street because they might have cool materials I can use. So I went to the shoe repair shop, and that’s where I met my teacher. At that moment, when I stepped into the shoe repair shop, I saw people polishing, cutting leather, last boots, etc. So I asked my teacher if I can come every Sunday and watch him work. From that day on, I slowly learned to appreciate boot making.

2. Tell us. What does a day in the life of yourself look like? What’s your daily work routine?

I wake up in the morning, put on my overalls and fedora, and head to my shop. Once I’m at the shop, I start off the mornings by sweeping and sharpening my tools. Then, I open up my planner and begin to go down my To Do list. I resole boots in the morning, and once it hits the afternoon, I start on my Role Club boot orders.

3. What are your top 3 bestselling items? And why do you think this is?

At the moment, the Role Club boot collection is small, but my #1 bestseller is the Role Club Engineer Boots. If you are into vintage Engineer boots from the 40s, then you would appreciate the Role Club Engineer Boots. I took many aspects from different brands. It took me about 2 years to design my holy grail.

4. What’s your personal favourite garment when it comes to the items you manufacture?

I enjoy making all styles of boots. It keeps my work entertaining. Because I get to work with different customers, I have the opportunity to make their ideas come to life.

5. What are your thoughts on the rise of Instagram fashion and the chaps that post their clothing on there to help spread the word of their fave brands?

I think it’s great! It brings more opportunities to smaller brands to get noticed. Also Instagram is just another tool people can use to expand their creativity. With a simple hashtag it could unite people from all over the world who enjoy a certain style.

6. Has it made an impact on your business at all, do you think?

Yes, Instagram fashion changed my life. It helped me find customers who appreciate what I do for a living. It also helped my customers understand more about the world of boot making.

7. Is there any feeds on IG that you particularly like to check-in on regular. What brands are you fond of on there? What menswear feeds to you like to peruse?

@vintage_american_workwear is one of my favorite Instagram feeds. It’s very inspiring when it comes to workwear. I really like his style.

8. A quick one about you. Other than the business, what passions do you have in life? What flicks your switch and helps you relax?

I like to play basketball, and I really love to cook for my family.

9. What do you consider to be the best thing about your business and why?

The best thing about my business is the honesty and pride that goes into my work because I don’t cut any corners when I work on people’s boots. What you see in my shop is the reality when it comes to making your boots. I make your boots from start to finish. When I say I use a single needle sewing machine, I genuinely am.

10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) only with you. And 1 choice of drink.

What would they be? And Why?

I would take a pair of overalls, my fedora, my Role Club Underdogs, and my chambray shirt. I’d take a sea salt black milk tea lol. I chose these clothing pieces because I feel they’d be the most comfortable, and I just love workwear.

Love it Brian, a top read. It’s really great that you are carrying on your teacher’s craft and, by the reaction from our focus group, I’m sure that Ignacio has the same pride in you that you obviously input into your product. I also, appreciate that you are sticking with your signature style on the island and I’m going to have to try a “sea salt black milk tea” for sure! Brian, it’s been a pleasure and thanks for taking the time. Stay in touch ✌️
