@denimbitch answers the 10@10

Evening blue bloods.

Well again it’s Thursday and, although I’m sat cradling a Stella, I’m pretty sure I’m still getting over the stag do I attended in Amsterdam that started last Thursday. What is it? You turn 34 and then all of a sudden the 4 day long booze hounding sessions are no longer possible…pfft, I had no idea until now!

I do want to mention that it was great hooking up with bros @bvo_66, @robindenim and @fadedblueeyes whilst I was over in the ‘Dam. We had coffee/beers, shopped a little denim over @tenuedenimes and all-around had a stellar few hours! Thanks for making the effort to come and say hello guys whilst I was over in your neck of the woods and Jim who drove from Germany! LEGEND!! We all posted a few pics of the meet which you can see on any of our profiles if you’re curious at all?

Anyways, this evening we are changing the 10@10 concept a little. Not much but a little…

We now have so many rad dudes and dudettes in line to be featured that moving forward we will be releasing two articles each Thursday. The first being at 10pm and the second being at…10.10pm! See what we did there? 😉 Obviously we want to encourage variety as much as possible so we will keep the features focused on totally different personalities, when we can anyways.

Which brings me to tonight’s soldiers. We are starting with an incredibly dapper RRL fanatic by the name of Dean aka @iamthedean and then we move straight onto a true “denim bitch”, seriously, it’s Suzie aka @denimbitch 😉 Yup it’s been ages since we did an RRL buff and it’s only the second denim sis we have put out there also. A perfecto combo!

Sit back people, relax, crack open a beer and NOW listen to the thoughts of Suzie as @denimbitch answers the @clobbercalm 10@10.

MEET THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MENSWEAR

NAME: Suzie Rudloff aka @denimbitch
AGE: 41 (oh God, I just said my age!)
LOCATION: Oakland, CA
OCCUPATION: Mental Health Therapy Intern/TV News Photographer

1. So Why Instagram?

Instagram is visual, I am visual. It totally works for me! I can scroll through those pics all day, everyday.

2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?

I have always been into denim, boots, workwear since I was young. I grew up in Kentucky and rode horses, we would wear 3 piece suits, fedoras, boots. I started riding when I was 3 so this more traditional style of clothes really fits me. Also, I grew up watching my Dad get dressed for work, he was a lawyer/judge. His closet was immaculate, and in some ways I keep a piece of him when I “suit up” everyday.

3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?

I think it’s awesome! I love how people are able to individualize through clothes, always have, and IG gives everyone the chance to share their fashion with others. It’s so global and so unique to each and everyone of us. And I love to see where people are, a little lesson in world geography every day with their backgrounds, travel, scenery.

4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?

Right now I am really intrigued by Conners Sewing Factory. I had a pair of late model 46s from them, but they were too small, so I had to pass them on to my skinnier buddy @sanforizedson. I’m a big fan of Levi’s, especially LVC stuff. Little unknown secret, my partner @graygirlinboots has worked for Levi’s for over 22 years. Most all brands base something on what Levi’s has done in the past, and I like to give kudos where they are deserved. Also, Michael Masterson is always someone to look out for! The guy is spectacularly unpredictable and creative and I love it. Also, Evan Kinori, his stuff looks basic, simple, but is so well done. I love that he’s in SF, so easy for me to get to and is doing things his own way. But, I am always a fan of what Rogue Territory is doing and think Karl and Leslie are some of the most genuinely nice folks and I love what they do.

5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands?

Standard and Strange for sure, it’s only a few blocks from my house and Neil and Jeremy are always trying to find me my size, or the color I want, and just all around good people and fun to hang with. Also, Snake Oil Provisions! They really curate their stuff and Ben and Miranda really have an eye for what’s cool, and I love they have come from such a small shop to a real powerhouse in this denim/fashion world.

Also, grailed.com/ebay/styleforum/denimbro. You really can’t go wrong with loving something someone else wanted to pass on. It rarely gets mentioned, but I love to find treasures that have been previously loved (or hated).

6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your threads on social media?

I looked the other day and I have over 600 posts on IG. I was like, when the f*ck did I have time to take all those pictures?? Really, though, I’m not sure. I have always loved interesting shots (I’m a photographer) and have shared my stuff on Facebook previous to IG.

7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?

Basically they are always taken by me, by leaning my iPhone 6s plus against something or balancing it on a sign when I have a break in my day. I like the spontaneity of it and I’m a long-time tv camera news photog and I love for the pics to be real, not altered by anything, really not much cropping, filters or anything. I am actually pretty shy and find it hard to ask someone to take a picture of me. I’m used to being behind the camera and not in front of it. So, I try to make the pic interesting with the background and highlighting my clothes/boots/hat/whatever. I never thought I would acquire followers, this has been as much for me, as I hope my followers, to be comfortable in front of the camera and show what I’m wearing.

8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?

Soooooooo many! @str8nl (this guy has all the stuff and wears it so well), @ky_bluegrass (I love his honest look, usually with his dogs and his stellar wardrobe), @sanforizedson (Ken has perfected vintage meets new, I call him a friend), @raw.denim.ocd (Rob is the guy who gets all the details, and I love how he is so interested in every piece), @aegishandcraft (Jess is cool, laid-back and makes some impeccably made stuff and I love to have another female in the Bay!), @redheadbluebottom (the name is amazing!-guy has style), @wildfrontiergoods (he knows how to pick his pieces wisely, PBJ, NineLives, down to the hat his dog Smokey wears), @rvamensch (Pierce is always perfectly accessorized, looks amazing and is one of the most supportive IG people ever), @gabegarza86 (Gabe is impeccably dressed, love when he goes all west Texas on us!), @vintage_engineer_boots, @indigonanner, @godbeaahh, @volvo_sufu, @shadows_of_indigo, @sneakit76, @standard_indigo. All of them have their own thing and I particularly like to see these folks, what they’re wearing, where they are, and stay connected with them.

9. What’s it like being a lady in what could be seen as a man’s world? After all, you rock the blue better than most of the blokes!

Eeeeeek! I don’t know about that. I just do me. I feel really comfortable in guy’s clothes. I feel like most women’s clothes are made horribly and show about everything us ladies have. I am a bit modest and want the stuff I wear to last more than one season-no disposable fashion for me! I definitely don’t want to be stealing any dude’s thunder, I just try to wear what I like, show off what I think is cool and am unbelievably grateful that guys are welcoming and supportive of me.

10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island, you can take 1 outfit (4 items) and 1 drink ONLY with you.

What would they be? Who made them? Why are you taking them?

I’d take my Otis James denim hat (gotta protect the head and face from the sun!), my Rgt Neppy Western shirt (because it is like second skin, I love this shirt and it loves me back), a lady white tee (good basics are important and it’s the best damn tee around!) and my favorite pair of faded and worn denim, Roy, RS01. I guess I can’t take my engineer boots! Wah. Wah. For the drink, I would go with lemon water. I know, kind of boring, but very refreshing and high in antioxidants!
