@chupsocks answers the 10@10

Hello people.

Ok, so got a confession…

…I’m actually tying this up a week in advance. I think I may have mentioned it but I’ve lost my right hand ‘@clobbercalm.cal‘ to the Sin City so I’ve had to get a head start on certain features so that I can make sure I take advantage of his editorial skills before he jets off and gets lost in casinos and strip bars for a week.

Anyways moving on – been looking forward to getting this feature out there for a few weeks now and #mocsandsocksmonday is the perfect opportunity.

Tonight is THE night we feature CHUP aka @chupsocks. Oh yes!

I first came across CHUP a couple of years back when I started to follow Bert aka @bvo_66. As we all know by now, Bert has great attention to detail with his CHUP and the colours pop! They looked so damn good with his Wings and Denham. I instantly became a fan!

Premium in quality and sexy on the eye, CHUP have attained a strong underground, almost cultish following and look particularly awesome when being sported Monday for our signature hashtag #mocksandsocksmonday.

A big shout out to all the lads whose imagery we have used for this feature, as always lads it’s much appreciated and with that bit out the way it’s now time to say…

…let’s sit back, relax, crack open a bevvie and listen to the thoughts of the mind behind the CHUP revolution, The Director/CEO of Glynn Clyde Mitsuru Hashimoto as @chupsocks answers the @clobbercalm 10@10.

MEET THE BRAND BEHIND THE MENSWEAR

NAME: Mitsuru Hashimoto
POSITION: Director/CEO
BRAND: Glen Clyde Inc.
ESTABLISHED: 1992
LOCATION: Nezu, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Japan
SIZE OF TEAM: Six
SPECIALITY/COMPANY FOCUS: CHUP socks

1. Straight forward, please tell us, how did your company Glen Clyde Inc. start out? (For people that don’t already know)

I started it by myself 25 years ago, with one borrowed desk in a factory. In the process of learning many things from various craftsmen, I developed my foundation regarding the quality that is represented by Glen Clyde today.

2. Tell us. What does a day in the life of yourself look like? What’s your daily work routine?

I review designs and the status and quality of samples with my staff. At Glen Clyde, instead of the phrase, “trying on” socks, we say “tasting”. This means we always strive to look at, touch, and wear and feel on the skin of our own feet all of our sock samples.

3. What are your top 3 bestselling items? And why do you think this is?

CHUP designs are traditional and therefore, I believe, universal. However, regarding the process of crafting our socks, we are not frugal with the selection of materials, technical research and inquiry, and determining colors in order to give rise to the originality of CHUP.

With CHUP, every season we release a new collection and the most popular styles differ accordingly, but I would say that the Navajo rug patterns are popular every year.

4. What’s your personal favourite garment when it comes to the items you manufacture?

All the products we make at Glen Clyde are like our children, so it’s difficult to pick any single one. I think that all CHUP embody a high level of completion and are hard to get bored of. We released our CORDURA line of socks recently and I’m pleased with how easy and comfortable they are to wear.

5. What are your thoughts on the rise of Instagram fashion and the chaps that post their clothing on there to help spread the word of their fave brands?

I think that fashion has come to feel more within reach thanks to Instagram. Fashion is a universal thing, a thing by which people express themselves. I think it’s wonderful that so many people can share this across cultures and national borders.

6. Has it made an impact on your business at all, do you think?

I’m extremely glad to be able to know how people who have ‘encountered’ our brands are living and fit our socks into their lives. It also provides impetus and strength to us, as makers, to keep moving on to the next challenge.

7. Is there any feeds on IG that you particularly like to check-in on regular. What brands are you fond of on there? What menswear feeds to you like to peruse?

I enjoy looking at photographers’ feeds, particularly ones that focus on nature. As for brands, I look at Best Made, Guideboat, 3sixteen, and FDMTL.

8. A quick one about you. Other than the business, what passions do you have in life? What flicks your switch and helps you relax?

I travel often. The various colors I take in during my travels are useful in creating/composing our designs. I also cook often. Imagining what dish I want to end up with and selecting the various ingredients is very similar to making socks, so I find it enjoyable.

For me, thinking about socks is fun so there’s no particular need to flick any switch. I’ve been in this line of work for 32 years and I’ve always felt this way.

9. What do you consider to be the best thing about your business and why?

When it comes to socks, we have a strong inclination to keep pushing toward the next challenge and seeing what doors haven’t been opened by anyone else yet and trying to be the first to open them. As a result, we have a huge “drawer”, or pool of knowledge and ideas, which is a big strength of Glen Clyde.

10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) only with you. And 1 choice of drink.

What would they be? And Why?

I would bring a long sleeve t-shirt (it would protect against both hot and cold, and if I cut the sleeves off they could be used as bandages) and full length sweatpants (easy to move around and protects against cold). I’d also bring a long “parka blouson” (probably Japanified word – means a hooded light jacket with cinchable waist and thin silhouette) made of durable, waterproof material, which could be used as a tent and also to collect rainwater. Finally, Red Wing boots, which could be used as containers for water. Finally, a bit plastic bottle of water, which could be used to send a message telling that/where I’m stranded.
