How’s things? I’m writing this on the back of a tip-top meet up with a bad ass boot brand. A brand that will soon be available through ‘CLOBBERCALM SUPPLY CO.’
I reckon I have just one more box to tick then I will be able to shoot a feature out confirming who we will be able to offer both via this website and our new HQ in the steel city of Sheffield, England!
Anyways more on that subject next week…
Today we feature a brand in it’s own right when we point the spotlight at BWeiss Leather. As a massive fan of artisans and small businesses BWeiss caught my eye a while ago and it’s great to finally get them here on the 10@10.
(Those mountains look incredible brother)
MEET THE BRAND BEHIND THE MENSWEAR
NAME: Brandon White
BRAND: BWeiss Leather
LOCATION: Colorado Mountains
SIZE OF TEAM: One
SPECIALITY/COMPANY FOCUS: Custom leather commissions, Indigo, and metal work.
Focus: Using the highest quality materials with a high attention to detail.
1. Straight forward, please tell us, how did your company BWeiss Leather start out? (For people that don’t already know)
A little back ground is needed to fill the gaps! I have been doing construction for the past 19 years so belts are a thing we always ruin pretty quickly…I believe it was sometime in September 2013 that my ‘genuine leather’ belt shit the bed and I had enough. I searched for a REAL leather belt and was kinda shocked at the 90.00+ sticker pricing. I figured I would give it a shot and found Tandy Leather about 1hr away and bought a 13oz hide of veg-tanned leather.
I made myself a belt and posted it to Facebook friends and got a great response/request to make them one. I then posted a thread to a BMW e30 forum I moderate: www.r3vlimited.com and got a HUGE response, it kinda just went from there. I got a request for a wallet from my good friend and BMW nut to be made from some OX blood BMW interior leather, after some feedback I joined Leatherworker forum and started teaching myself how to use pricking irons/chisels and how to saddle stitch.
2. Tell us. What does a day in the life of yourself look like? What’s your daily work routine?
Mornings I respond to emails/Instagram for orders and requests. Then I pack the tools I need for my day on the job site and leave for my day job: BWeiss Construction. I am a contractor by day and leather worker by night/weekend. I am blessed with the fact I can work when I want and not answer to anyone haha.
I do work out of town a lot so my leather bench acquires some dust on it from time to time. So my leather/metal goods are made to order so if I cannot get to it this week it’s purely just updating the customer on their wait time.
If it’s a day I don’t have construction work to do, I start with emails like normal, cook breakfast(two eggs, sausage/spam on a bagel with hot sauce). I then go down to my shop in the basement and check my whiteboard for my first order on the wait list. I get what I need out and prep my work area(clean/place tools). Put on some music and get to laying out the measurements for my pattern cuts. I normally pack the day in around 5/6pm clean up my area and go upstairs to prep for dinner.
3. What are your top 3 bestselling items? And why do you think this is?
1. Vegtan braided lanyard with bone feather
2. Black or Chestnut belt
3. Trifold wallet in Black/Red Horween CXL
4. What’s your personal favourite garment when it comes to the items you manufacture?
My hand formed copper/brass buckles on a hand stitched belt. It allows me to infuse both mediums into one functional object.
5. What are your thoughts on the rise of Instagram fashion and the chaps that post their clothing on there to help spread the word of their fave brands?
It’s amazing! I think it is really rebooting the way people view things they buy. I love seeing all the hard work come into one grid shot from the smallest account to the larger ones. It shows how far of a reach this is really having around the world. It’s very humbling to have sent orders to every corner of the world and seeing my work being used someplace I might never see in person…to have something of myself there.
6. Has it made an impact on your business at all, do you think?
Big time! I get orders from all over the world from complete strangers saying how they have saved up for an item I make. How they fell in love, the pure joy…it’s truly humbling.
I really need to focus on posting more, I just don’t really social media that much.
7. Is there any feeds on IG that you particularly like to check-in on regular. What brands are you fond of on there? What menswear feeds to you like to peruse?
I am a BIG gearhead so i follow a lot of BMW/caferacer woodworking stuff.
I really love checking in on a handful of menswear brands:
For the menswear, I always love seeing what these guys are up to:
8. A quick one about you. Other than the business, what passions do you have in life? What flicks your switch and helps you relax?
Flea Market/Garage sales…nothing like finding hidden gold! I am an avid woodworker/furniture maker, I LOVE creating with wood, it was the first medium I got into.
I’m also pretty big into the car modification world, I built my BMW track car from the ground up with all new race parts. So driving that car and working on it is such a relaxing thing.
I love nature, hiking, and photography so I spend a great deal of time escaping the world and viewing through my eyes or a lens.
I am obsessed with cooking, so that is something I love doing!…or maybe I just love eating? I’ll get back to you after second breakfast.
Not sure if it is relaxing…but I am an avid Halo 3 gamer, I started gaming a long ass time ago but never seemed to move on from Halo 3 haha! Shoot me a DM if you want in IG to run sometime!
9. What do you consider to be the best thing about your business and why?
Truly Custom; I love giving my customers the ability to select and combo the end result. Everything from leather to having me carve wax to make their one off hardware. It’s not some item from a store, it is THEIR item that they had a hand in…makes it so very special.
10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) only with you. And 1 choice of drink. What would they be? And Why?
Let it be known I HATE the heat(anything above 73 degrees)…so being a desert island:
