@railcarfinegoods answers the 10@10

Evening Blue Bloods.

God, we have missed chatting to you over the past few weeks. As you know we have been, flat out, working on the Supply Co. and new website but FINALLY it feels like we have managed to get back on an even keel and have the time to pick up where we left off at the start of October with our 10@10 series.

As it’s our first back, we wanted to hit the ground running and smash the 10@10 with a sledgehammer and luckily for us one of our suppliers @railcarfinegoods were just about ready to drop their 10@10 last week lining up a great return for us. Yeah, it’s been a while coming but this week we will feature both Steven of RC as part of the brand 10@10 this evening and then on Thursday we have our 3rd woman behind the menswear when @taylorofrailcar answers the 10@10 on a personal level.

So, yeah we are pretty Railcar’d up for the week! Awesome.

Heart and soul are what Railcar enthusiasts say you should expect from their products and their service is second to none. Plain and simple, Railcar’s small team do things right and for that reason we HAD to represent them here in the UK at the Supply Co. Sheffield, England.

Dudes, let’s get to the good stuff! It’s time to sit back, relax, crack open a beer and enjoy the thoughts of Mr Steven Dang as @railcarfinegoods answers the @clobbercalm 10@10.

1. Straight forward, please tell us, how did your company Railcar start out? (For people that don’t already know)

(For people that don’t already know) I was a lead mechanic working on trains for the Los Angeles Metro (hence the name Railcar). I started out making jeans actually just for fun. This was 10 years ago now. I made a few pairs and tried to sell them to a local men’s store and they bought it. The brand kept going from there.

2. Tell us. What does a day in the life of yourself look like? What’s your daily work routine?

My day never really starts and stops. I wake up at 5am. Get to the shop a little before 6am. Turn on the shop, make a pot of coffee, do a walk around to see what I have going on. I do this before my staff of 10 people get here. They start to get in at 7am.

I like getting in before everybody so I can get a game plan going to get as much work done as I can. Once I can get everyone going, I then go into my design and cutting room. I always play with new designs, fabrics and fits. I do most of all my developments in that room.

When there is a hole in the production and it needs to get caught back up, I’ll jump in line. I can sew all the operations so I tend to jump in when I can. My small staff starts leaving at 4:30pm. I usually stick around and sort out the workshop after everyone goes home. I really enjoy the alone time here at the shop. Early mornings and late nights are my favourite.

3. What are your top 3 bestselling items? And why do you think this is?

All of our styles seem to do really well. It’s hard to pick out 3 items. I put so much heart and work in all of them, I love them all.

4. What’s your personal favourite garment when it comes to the items you manufacture?

I’ve always liked making jeans. Now I’m digging into our shirting program more and more. I built a workshop and a set of machines specifically to make shirts and I’m really getting into that.

5. What are your thoughts on the rise of Instagram fashion and the chaps that post their clothing on there to help spread the word of their fave brands?

I think it’s a great way to spread the awareness. It’s amazing to see people enjoy wearing the clothes that we’ve made.

6. Has it made an impact on your business at all, do you think?

It’s a good platform for us to share Railcar’s story and engage with people. We document a lot of our day to day on social media.

7. Is there any feeds on IG that you particularly like to check-in on regular. What brands are you fond of on there? What menswear feeds to you like to peruse?

Instagram is great but my day is so busy I don’t really get to dig in too much. I just basically see the next few pics in the feed and have to get back to work.

8. A quick one about you. Other than the business, what passions do you have in life? What flicks your switch and helps you relax?

I work on my cars, motorcycles and house. that keeps me pretty busy. I like to keep busy. Getting home and relaxing with my girl @mynamechanged and my daughter Riley is what I enjoy the most.

9. What do you consider to be the best thing about your business and why?

I think the best thing about our business is that we make all of our garments in house. We don’t subcontract our manufacturing to a downtown factory. We really keep our items handmade. We own a collection of about 80 sewing machines in a 5000 square foot shop where we make everything. We also back up our product too. Super easy to work with.

10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) only with you. And 1 choice of drink.

I would want a Railcar Chore Coat! Very versatile in hot and cold weather.

1

The new Railcar Spikes X034 Super Slub 15 ounce. Because it just seems perfect in weight and comfort.

11

A Railcar Felon long sleeve button down. I feel like that would last.

5

And some boots! For all that island walking. I wouldn’t want to sprain an ankle.

My one choice of drink would be a Vietnamese Ice Coffee. If water was already defaulted in my diet. If it isn’t, water it would be.

Thank you very much for your time Steven, buddy. It’s going to be fun teaming up to push the RC product over here in the UK and I look forward to seeing more and more from you guys as you continue to grow and produce killer lines season after Season.

If anybody has any questions about the Supply Co. and the brands we are stocking, feel free to drop me a line HERE or a simple DM on IG always works.

Have a cracking week people and speak again real soon! Much love.

Ben @clobbercalm.
