Good evening folks.
This one’s going to be mega short & sweet as one, tonight’s ‘…Man Behind…’ Dave aka @davecfcevans has done us a little bio which tells you everything you need to know about him. Two, I’ve got a date so need as much time as possible to crimp my beard ha!
Seriously, Dave defines the fact that ‘age is just a number’ as, at 63, he rocks it just as much as any young’n. If not, more so…let you guys answer that?
MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MENSWEAR
NAME: Dave Evans AKA @davecfcevans
LOCATION: Poole, Dorset
OCCUPATION: Security Officer
My name is Dave Evans. I am 63 years young and live in Poole, a historic town on the south coast of England. I’ve been married to Julie for 40 years and we have two children, Lee 34 and Nikki 32. We also have two grand-kids, Evan who is nearly 5 and Elena who is 18 months.
I have lived in the area most of my life and since the acquisition of said grandchildren, most of my time is taken up with work and family. Any spare time I get is spent catch-up on on the many box sets of excellent TV series that are currently available. I also have a purpose built gym in my garage and like to keep in some sort of shape after being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.
We live close to one of the country’s best Blue Flag beaches and quite often go for long walks ending with coffee at the famous Jazz Cafe.
I am a lifelong Chelsea FC fan and used to go to games regularly but these days I tend to watch games with my mates in my local pub when I’m not working.
1. So Why Instagram?
Up to last year, I basically only used Facebook for my social media fix, mainly to keep in touch with family and friends. It was also a great way of meeting new Chelsea fans and as a result, a lot of them became lifelong friends. But recently, my son who is a well respected DJ persuaded me to try Instagram.
Well I gave it a go and it opened up a Pandora’s Box of possibilities for my artistic and narcissistic personality that I couldn’t share on Facebook. Once I got the hand of it and saw what people were putting on there, I quickly got hooked on the feeds that showed stuff that I love…so I joined the Denim Community.
2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?
As a kid, I grew up watching mainly black and white Western TV series like ‘Rawhide’, ‘Gunsmoke’ and ‘Maverick’…style icons of that era included Steve McQueen, a young Clint Eastwood and any cowboy wearing denim and boots! Also films with Marlon Brando and James Dean portraying ‘rebels without a suit’ were starting to influence my fashion tastes.
I remember saving my paper round money back in 1969 and buying my first pair of shrink to fit Levi’s wearing them in the bath for two hours before my mum came up to see if I was ok! As fashion changed over the decades, denim was still my staple outfit of choice, paired with various styles or flowered shirts, suede cowboy boots and of course the obligatory Converse chucks. If you know the Kinks 1966 song ‘Dedicated Follower of Fashion’, well that was me!
With the advent of marriage in 1977 and a mortgage to pay, fashion took a back seat and when the kids came along in ’83 and ’85 they obviously took priority.
Punk came and went and my musical tastes Sunderland dictated what I wore. I’ve always been into hard rock and with the coming of bands like Guns ‘n’ Roses, Nirvana and Metallica, denim, boots and rad t-shirts were suddenly cool again. I take my inspiration from all sorts of things whether it be something I see in a magazine or on TV. In more recent times, sporting heroes who are now earning astronomical fortunes are boosting their incomes by becoming fashion icons. One in particular who inspires my current love for denim, boots and rugged wear is David Beckham. He could wear a friggin’ bin liner and still look the bollocks! With a new job started last November, I have to wear a suit to work on a daily basis. So, because my time is limited to wear my outfits of choice, I’m slowly building a wardrobe of quality garments that I look forward to wearing regularly when I retire in 2020.
3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?
I think it’s great! iPhones have decent cameras now and with various photo improvement apps available, it’s never been a better time to point and click an image of your outfit onto IG for the world to see. When I retire in less than 3 years, I intend to buy a decent camera and take up photography as a hobby. I personally post for fun and not for likes, if people like what I post then I’m happy. It’s never been about the number of followers, I talk to a lot of the guys in the denim community on IG and it’s great to see what they are wearing. I’ll often take a mental note of something that catches my eye sometimes take inspiration from that…
4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?
As I’m fairly new to the latest workwear scene, I’m going to go with the 3 that, after careful research and reviews from fellow denim dudes, have impressed me.
1 – Boots… the number 1 for comfort, fit and durability are @redwingheritage especially the Iron Ranger. I know they are an obsession with some guys but I’m happy to own 3 pairs and a pair of Moc’s. They should all outlive me! haha..
2 – Denim… the first pair of raws I bought after getting back into the scene were a pair of @tellason Gustave 14.5oz Cone Mills Slim Tapered. I specifically wanted a pair of American made jeans and they ticked all the right boxes. Their other pieces are equally as good, especially the Coverall Jacket which is on my radar for this year.
3 – @3sixteen because I’ve been impressed with their modern take on classic pieces. OK, they’re a little pricey but I always say “quality over quantity”. I have the (now very popular) Type 3 Shadow Selvedge Jacket and the awesome indigo fleece western flannel shirt which are so comfortable and will be the staple pieces of my wardrobe for years to come.
I could also include @ironheartdenim and @nakedandfamousdenim in there as I’ve started to include some Japanese denim in my collection. There is so much choice now for the discerning denimhead with so many countries producing such high quality goods.
5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands?
Unfortunately, there aren’t too many stores near me but occasionally I’ll jump on the train to London and peruse the shops around Carnaby Street and Covent Garden. @Rivetandhide are probably my favourite store as they carry all the top brands and their customer service is second to none.
@ironheartdenim have a warehouse about 90 minutes from me by car but I’ve yet to visit them as their online service is excellent. Internet wise, I find that @cultizm offer a great choice of brands and top notch customer service. Of course I’ve left the best ’til last with Clobbercalm Supply Co.who have been more than helpful with some recent purchases. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish Ben and his team every success for the future and I can’t wait to find some time to make a trip ‘oop north and spend time in the store…and in the pub!
6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your threads on social media?
I started flirting with the idea around 18 months ago with the odd few pics of clobber that I already had, but as I got more into seeing what other people were wearing and posting I gradually started buying select items based on reviews and testimonials. As my collection grew, I started posting more regularly as people began to comment and I became more confident in interacting with like minded souls.
7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?
No secret mate…. just my trusty iPhone 6 and me, because I work a 12 hour shift from 6am – 6pm its difficult to find time for outdoor shots this time of year so I mainly shoot indoors using natural lighting. The timer is a big help!
On my days off i’m usually helping out with the Grandkids. My wife thinks I’m a vain so and so and totally doesn’t get the concept, even though I was voted Bournemouth’s ‘Best Dressed Man’ back in 1999…
8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?
Far too many to mention… I’ll have to say Mr Red Wing himself @jmietzel whose collection is phenomenal. @johanmalik80 is one of the first guys that stimulated my interest in rugged workwear. Victor AKA @selvedge1 and @inn8chiro are two rad guys that inspire me. @toomanypants is the ‘Ace of Fades’ and @bothrops1 mixes it up beautifully. Jens AKA @sel.vage is always on point and of course if you’re reading this and not following @clobbercalm then pop outside and have a word with yourself!
9. What tips would you give new starters on Instagram to help them get there feed off the ground and successful?
It depends on what you want to achieve. If you want to just post outfit shots then look at feeds you enjoy and develop a style that works for you. Post regularly and above all interact with your chosen community. If you have something to say as well as something to show then you’ll double your chances of a successful feed. I’m still learning…
10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island, you can take 1 outfit (4 items) and 1 drink ONLY with you.
What would they be? Who made them? Why are you taking them?
Hmm… Desert island? Sunshine, palm trees, coconuts? Easy peasy!!!
1 – Deus Ex Machina mesh trucker cap. It would keep the sun off my bald bonce and double as a fishing net, clever eh?!
2 – 3Sixteen Type 3 Shadow Selvedge Jacket just because its so f*cking awesome. It would keep me warm at night and fade beautifully during the day.
3 – Naked and Famous Broken Elephant 6 Jeans as I’d need something solid whilst climbing those coconut trees! Plus they could have their first sea wash!
4 – Red Wing Iron Ranger 8113 Muleskinners… quite simply the best boots ever! Perfect for exploring the island and practising keepy-uppy with the coconuts.
Aaaah the drink!! I think it would have to be a bottle of spiced rum. Perfect to mix with coconut juice and should I happen to be rescued by a band of marauding pirates, I could thank them with a welcoming tot.
Thank you so much Dave, for your time and this MEGA write up! Top geezer, pal. Ingenious use of your drink choice there mate, love it
