Time for another round of 'The Men Behind The Menswear' (yes I just pictured myself saying that as some sort of cheesy 90's TV Quiz Show host, in a sequin suit). Anyhooo, tonight we have the pleasure of listening to fellow Brit Tim as he answers the 10@10, about his new Wing obsession and love of small brands...
MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MENSWEAR
NAME: Tim Roberts AKA @denim_collective
LOCATION: Telford, Shropshire, UK
OCCUPATION: Mechanical Engineer
1. So Why Instagram?
It’s a great platform to post your photos whether that be for fun like what I do, or if you use it for more business purposes. I find it crazy how one photo and a few hashtag can potentially reach thousands of people and all it takes is just one person to see that one photo that makes them want to buy something, for very little input there can be a high reward.
2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?
For years I used to be heavily into streetwear and at the time I hated it, I only wore it because that’s what my mates wore. I first came into contact with a pair of Red Wings at a hardcore gig a while back soon as I saw the profile of the 875s I knew I needed a pair and from then I started feeling really comfortable wearing denim and boots. Now I own 5 pairs of wings and a few pairs of selvedge denim. I just wear what makes me feel really happy and that’s exactly what the rugged look does for me. Plus I think the community is by far the best one to be a part of.
3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?
It’s brilliant, its a quick way to find new brands and too see what all the guys and girls are wearing and how they wear their clobber. It's a lot easier for me to go on insta and look for brands then it is to trawl through the internet and also as I said in the question before hand it is the best community to be a part of there is no peacocking, no one really cares what brands you wear as long as you can you have a laugh and drink beers that’s all we care about. YOU are the most welcoming dudes I’ve ever spoken to, I feel like I’ve gained friends all over the world because of it.
4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?
Going to put these out to the smaller business who I think are killing it...
Smiths leather balm @smithsleatherbalm: are fast becoming a go to for all leather care, these two truly get what people want out of a balm. Not only is it great for boots and will be the reason why mine are with me when I’m 70, but also the balm isn’t going to damage your skin and leave it greasy like the majority of every other balm out there. Guys I’m truly sorry about the situation with the mug I don’t know what happened there.
877 workshop @877workshop: I had the absolute pleasure of being the reason to why this small company are now being sold in the UK and I have never felt so happy about getting this sorted out, I know a fair few of you guys have a few of their rings so you know what I’m talking about when it comes to craftsmanship, these two are artist in their own rights. Once I’m married and have some spare cash I’ll be back guys xxx
Yokai.motorcycle @yokai.motorcycle.engineering: okay so strictly this is a fashion blog but I couldn’t not mention this very talented guy, a true artist when it comes to fabrication and a true gent. I’ve spent hours talking to Lawrence whether it’s engineering, job interviews, clothing or motorbikes. Also the reason why he gets a mention is he makes a great hot shoe for all your flat trackers out there and for people who like a good place stopper he’s hand made his own moc toes lace stoppers.
5. Where’s your favorite place to shop these brands?
I usually do my shopping online as it's easier for me, when I can be bothered to leave the house I’ll head up to Birmingham to check out liquor store or if I’m feeling brave enough I'll head up to CCSC.
Cant wait to visit the shop again you boys have nailed it.
6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your threads on social media?
I decided to voice my love for the threads just over a year ago after I got my 1st pair of wings, the 1st couple of guys I followed were Ben @clobbercalm and @sennah0j I have a lot to thank for these dudes as I took a lot of style and photo ideas from both of them.
7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?
I rope my partner into taking the majority of my photos @athomewithholly she has a real natural eye for taking great photos of me and my feed wouldn’t be as big if it wasn't for her. But recently I’ve roped in a very good friend of mine @dantakesportraits he really gets what I want out of a photo and he killer it every time. They’re usually taken when I’m off work on my 4 days, since starting my blog I’ve tried to take one everyday but it can be very hard when you work a lot haha. I just try to take it as if it was staged so that people can truly see what the clothes look like plus I try to engage with all my followers, as you are great.
8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?
@sennah0j I’m pretty sure lee style their denim on him, great silhouette aha @daddy_neil all round great guy and family man and I share his pain with the 05:30 starts @thehaguedenim killer style and photos man. A great blog to follow. @lordoftheredwings Thanks for introducing me to @andsons and another killer blog with awesome photos and denim collection @upstateguystyle A gentleman in the truest form and a true style icon of new York @davecfcevans if I look as good as this bloke when I grow up I’m going to be a very happy man, check his blog out if you don’t and you’ll know why
9. What tips would you give new starters on Instagram to help them get their feed off the ground, and successful?
Just be yourself and interact with the people following you, no one cares what you wear as long as you’re not ignorant you’ll gain followers and even more friends.
10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) Only and 1 x drink with you. What would they be? Who made them? And Why?
Redwing iron rangers in hawthorne, light weight and sturdy. Your feet will stay cool whilst navigating the island in search of food.
My carhartt 13.5 japanese denim, light enough in weight to keep you cool but again sturdy enough to manage the desert life.
Peregrine lingmoor jacket, made of showerproof cotton, it’ll sure to keep me dry during the wet seasons, plus it’s a gorgeous jacket and you gotta look good always.
Ralph Lauren henley, it’ll keep me warm during the cold nights, plus it’s blue.
Lifetime supply of Brooklyn larger.
Thanks Tim for the 10@10, it's been a great read and I think there are a few links there I might need to look into, imagine that's the same for a lot of our readers.
