I've spent today (+ the last couple of days) packing up my flat...so much heavy lifting, and that's just the denim 😉 It's fair to say it's taken it out of me and my poor ol' Dad, who offered to help unknowing how much shit I really do have! If you would be so kind to perhaps raise a glass to his spinal cord which got left behind around trip 53 (approx.) back-and-forth to the van 😬🍻
On to tonight's blog as we go back-to-back with '...Women Behind The Menswear' features. You're forcing our hands really gals as you're all tearing the cover off (baseball reference for all our US brethren ⚾️) with your feeds and this evening's featuree is no different as we have Vicki Bale aka @denim_girl_jeans in the hot-seat.
"Beautiful Japanese denim, not just for guys, but for girls too." Vicki exudes denim style and it's apparent she shares, with many of us, an indigo fade fascination!
MEET THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MENSWEAR
NAME: Vicki Bale aka @denim_girl_jeans
LOCATION: Bridgnorth, Shropshire, UK
OCCUPATION: MD Priors Period Ironmongery (Internet Retail)
1. So Why Instagram?
Images are such a powerful way to communicate with no language barriers and I like photography.
2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?
I have loved denim all my life and am fascinated with the fade. I wear jeans every day.
Boots, well it goes without saying I am a woman! I have a 20 year old pair of RM Williams boots chewed by my dog and I still wear them, nothing has ever been as good.
3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?
I think it is great. I found the denim community about a year ago and I can now share my passion (obsession) for denim with other like minded folk. The world of denim is so big and I love to see images from around the world. When we are cold and tucked up by the fire here in the UK, someone in Oz is posting a beach image and complaining about the heat!
I love to see the amazing fades that people achieve and the results of their denim journeys. It is also great if you are purchasing, to see what well worn items look like.
You can get to see smaller artisan companies who make great products, who you would never normally find.
4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?
PBJ for their fabulous denims and fades. I first had a pair of their women’s stretch jeans and then I realised their slim tapered Men’s model fitted me perfectly, so I could have proper selvedge denim. With a bit of tapering below the knee they were fabulous.
Iron Heart for their super quality items. I have a couple of shirts and jeans including a 25oz pair. Some of the most amazing fades you can see on Instagram are Ironheart. They don’t do much for women, but I fit their small sizes.
You won’t have had this before and not one well known in the denim community - Rogue Matilda Shoes. They make fun quirky brogues and sneakers for girls. I love it when my shoes make me smile. Because I am often all denim clad, I like more girlie colourful shoes. I have a new pair of neutral leather Butts and Shoulders boots and my old RM Williams, which are a bit more hard core.
5. Where’s your favorite place to shop these brands?
I shop for all my clothing and shoes on-line. I love Denimio in Japan and find their service good. They measure products for you on request and I am very sure of my size so I can buy with confidence. They do also have a good returns service if you need to fall back on it.
I find everyone in the denim world great to deal with and offering exceptional standards of service. I think that’s because they are all denim heads too and in love with the products they sell.
6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your threads on social media?
I started about a year ago with a few images and then I quickly got hooked. I have mainly posted images of denim details and related products. It has been an expensive year though, so many great things and temptations!
7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?
I take all my images. Living on my own I don’t have a budding photographer to take pics of me, which is probably just as well! I take shots around the house and outside too. Living in rural Shropshire I can get some nice scenic shots. It does amuse me sometimes how the denim community like what I think is a boring shot. Give them a close up of denim texture, a leather patch or jeans soaking in the bath – result, lots of likes!
8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?
@swissjeansfreak Ruedi Karrer takes denim devotion to new heights. I recently visited his museum in Zurich along with his 14,000 denim items. He is always in the mountains in denim.
@corymahlke He is the most amazing and creative work wear photographer
@nico.mantzke He looks great in everything and is always appearing in amazing denim gear.
@bvo_66 Bert has a great simple Scandi style images and loves his denims, boots and socks
@hi.denim we have the same great taste in denim!!
And don’t forget the Dudettes:
@denimbitch Suzie who posts hard core denim items and boots
@blaewen Lisa posts from Oz and describes herself as “Denim tragic” I like that!
9. What is like being a lady in, what could be seen as, a man’s world? After all you rock the blue better than most of the blokes!
Thank you for that! It is a shame it is a bit of a man’s denim world and I don’t really understand why that is. Great denim should be enjoyed by everyone! It is so much more fun to fade a pair of quality selvedge denim jeans, than to buy some horrid pre-faded fashion ones. You just never develop the same relationship and love! Hopefully the women’s market is on the rise. I am just lucky I am not too curvy, so I can fit into men’s items. Slowly some of the big brands are catering for women like Momotaro, Railcar, 3 Sixteen and Nudie. I am also encouraged to see some start up brands like Hen’s Teeth and Ullac going straight into women’s fits. There are also some really great denim dudettes appearing on Instagram.
10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) Only and 1 x drink with you. What would they be? Who made them? And Why?
For my drink I would take Cherry Active made from Mont Morency (US) cherries and dilute it with water. It’s a healthy drink and it tastes wonderful. I love tea (being a proper Brit), but perhaps not the best on a desert island!
For my outfit, ooh, this is hard!
Well it’s got to be a pair of PBJ jeans, maybe xx012 the deep slubby indigo ones, an Ironheart denim shirt to double as a jacket, an Armorlux striped Breton T- shirt and a crazy pair of Rogue Matilda sneakers for when I am not in the sand.
Love it Vicki! So many great fades on your feed it was super hard choosing which images to focus on tonight. Everyone should go get drunk on the denim fade goodness over on your IG, for damn sure. Thanks for taking the time Vicki, especially with the new addition to your day-to-day (Vicki just got a 6 week old puppy) taking up a lot of your attention. Cheers ✌️
