D'Arcy here, reporting in for tonights 'Men Behind The Menswear'. A nice and quiet Thursday this week, no cocktail launch, no awards night, no new bar opening, just a mug of Yorkshire Tea and a cuddle with the rabbits on the sofa. So rock and roll.
Sticking with the Holland theme this week, after Mondays 10@10 with @mudjeans
(catch up here) and @clobbercalm.cal being over in Amsterdam, we now have the ever so creative Koen from Amsterdam, if you haven't seen his post, get over to @koenkuik now! Great to see some creative edited photos.
MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MENSWEAR
NAME: Koen AKA @koenkuik
OCCUPATION: Health Care, Owner Dutch Denim Blog Blue Roots Official
1. So Why Instagram?
Instagram is for me the best place to connect with like-minded people. It's great to talk to them, get styling ideas and personally being creative with my own pictures.
2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?
There is something special about those products. Well made, they last longer and just looks rough. The more I get into the denim scene the more fascinated I become. There are always new things to learn.
3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?
It kinda makes sense. It is a picture sharing platform. So people are willing to show what they have. There is nothing wrong with it. But its the way people act. Within the denim scene (almost) everybody is super friendly and helpful. I maybe sound like a fangirl, but hey, there is nothing better than the denim scene! :)
4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?
Levis Vintage clothing: Most of my products are LVC items. Its the story behind it that makes it special. The history, the craftsmanship etc. Red Wing Shoes: Simple, timeless and super comfortable (after the break-in period..) Livid: Just beautiful pieces!
5. Where’s your favorite place to shop these brands?
I'm from Amsterdam so if I don't say Tenue De Nimes they will never let me in! So Tenue De Nimes!
6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your threads on social media?
A few months after Instagram started I made an account called . I made pictures of everything that reflected me. Got bored and changed it to my own name. It took a few years before I started with really sharing my passion for denim. When I started Blue Roots Official I really became active. And since then it has his ups and downs! :).
7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?
I'm taking my own pictures. But I'm still looking for my own style. Tried those flat lays and outfit posts for a long time but I was only posting them for the likes. I wasn't happy with it. I wanted to be more creative. Now I'm combining those two. When I don't have time I will post a simple product when I have a day off I'm making funny, weird or creative photos with photoshop. Just to break true the standard Instagram posts. I'm slowly getting there!
8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?
I think I can't be original anymore with the names I will say, but I really like @calgeary. I followed him from the start and he really stepped up his game! Its great to see the progress he has made. @tl.sorenson keeps me sharp. He makes also creative posts and that motivates me to make new pictures. @Fort_box_ Keeping it simple but always on point.
9. What tips would you give new starters on Instagram to help them get their feed off the ground, and successful?
Create your own style! There are a lot of accounts that are posting flat lays and outfit shots. A few are big but the most of them won't. So get original, try something new, change the game. That's easy to say. Get original. But its hard. What I mean is; everybody is posting pictures why not making videos instead. Or use a whiteboard in your pictures to directly communicate with your followers. Think out of the box. Or just post flat lays and outfit shots and hope for the best! ;)
10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) Only and 1 x drink with you. What would they be? Who made them? And Why?
This question always scared me the most. My best outfit would be: Benzak contest jeans: Would definitely win the contest with a story like that Converse all stars : Can't wear my Red Wings in hot weather so this is the next best thing. Blue Roots Official T-shirt: Just proud of my own shirt and shameless plug. Wrangler Peter Max sherpa: Colourful jacket so people will notice me if they will pass by and perfect for cold nights. Drink: in a glass bottle. The glass can be handy and cola is just always good.
