Hello people.

Good Evening all of the blue blooded ilk, hope the week has treated you sweetly so far and you’re heading towards the weekend on a soft and fluffy cloud that’s soundtracked by the sounds of harp wielding, Raw Denim wearing angels. It’s up to you whether they’re wearing boots, in my head they’re not but hey-ho!

But enough of that crap…back to biz.

As you, hopefully already, know this week we have focused on our buddy Isaac from @pigeontreecrafting. On Monday we focussed on his awesome one-man ‘…Brand…’ PTC which you can read HERE and tonight we speak to Isaac about Isaac!

For anybody that doesn’t know @clobbercalm and PTC hooked up to do a collaboration belt called the PT3xC, that you can click through to below, and from the moment we nailed that we have spoken weekly about various topics and have continued to establish a true friendship, that I hope personally grows more and more as the future unfolds.

I think a lot of peeps probably only think of rad leather goods when they think of the PTC feed but on a 10@10 level this feed is so much more. Isaac is an avid denim head with an incredible eye for detail and in my opinion his personal denim interests were as much of a priority to get on the 10@10 as his one man brand.

Guys this is where I pass this shizzle over to Isaac to entertain for the next 10 minutes or so which means it’s time to sit back, relax, crack open a bevvie (I’m on Pilsner Urquell right now) and listen to the thoughts of Isaac as, for the second time this week, @pigeontreecrafting answers the @clobbercalm 10@10.

NAME: Isaac Paul aka @pigeontreecrafting
AGE: 31
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA
OCCUPATION: Small Business Owner (Pigeon Tree Crafting)

1. So Why Instagram?

I played around with Instagram for years, mostly posting my hobby photography shots and meals that I’d cook, but it wasn’t until I discovered the rich denim community on Instagram that I really found my place! I started posting pictures of my favorite denim pieces and outfits, and I found myself welcomed with opened arms into the community. I made friends, exchanged compliments, and drew inspiration.

2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?

For me, it’s ALWAYS been jeans. Since my mid teens, I don’t think I ever wore anything but! Even living in Los Angeles, where it can get quite hot, I was always the guy in jeans. I don’t even own shorts that aren’t meant for swimming. Back in 2011 I was living in Glassel Park, a couple of miles away from Eagle Rock; that’s where I discovered raw denim, in a shop by the name of Rising Sun Jeans. It didn’t happen immediately however, because I couldn’t afford the jeans at the time. I ended up getting a gift card for Nordstrom not long after though, and after a failed attempt of finding anything worth buying in the Nordstrom B&M, I took to online, and you guessed it- they had Rising Sun Jeans- and on sale too! I was so amazed, it felt like destiny. I ordered a pair of Straight Razors, one of their slimmer cuts, but when the package arrived, it was a pair of Blacksmith, a heritage piece with suspender buttons and all. As cool as they were, I wanted the Straight Razors; I called up Rising Sun and spoke to a woman named Khue, she told me to come in and they’d be happy to make the swap. The rest is history.

3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?

The Instagram fashion community, specifically the denim community, is full of interesting people who are connected by so much more than just denim; it’s a lifestyle that’s based on expression, individuality, and the hunt for quality. I can say with absolute certainty that I wouldn’t have started my brand if it weren’t for the denim community on Instagram. The community is strong and continuing to grow without dilution, brands are being pushed to create better, longer lasting goods, and the more people that get involved, the more we will all flourish, both as consumers and makers.

4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?

Rising Sun Jeans, the brand that truly started it all for me. I have so many pieces from them, it’s rare that you’ll spot me without at least one article from RS!

Pure Blue Japan, the first piece of Japanese denim that I’ve ever owned, and I love it (the type II deep Indigo Jacket). I was nervous about venturing out into Japanese denim because of possible fit issues, but if you are diligent with checking measurements, you’ll be fine!

Samurai Jeans, I don’t have any denim from these guys yet, but I have two flannels that are among my favorite shirts ever, and they both have indigo in them, so they’re faders too!

5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands?

I’m a huge online shopper. The amount of packages that I have coming to my doorstep is laughable. My business is based online, and nearly all of my materials are ordered online as well, so when you add in any sort of personal online shopping that I do, it’s crazy. I have not yet had to buy boxes for my business, I recycle EVERYTHING. When not buying new, I love hunting vintage as well, vintage shops, flea markets, yard sales, you name it, and I’ll hunt it!

6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your threads on social media?

I had been approached by Rising Sun to do some modeling for them. Neck down, fit-type stuff for their site and wholesale. One of the things they liked about me when I first met them, was that their jeans didn’t need to be hemmed to fit me! It pretty much started around then, I had access to all of these great shots of me in my favorite brand, and I wanted to help with promoting their brand, so I started posting shots that they took as well as shots that I would take of various outfits.

7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?

Most of my shots are taken with my iPhone! Every once in a while, I’ll do a shoot with my Canon 5D, I have a photography background, so I have some pretty sick lenses. My girlfriend is usually kind enough to help me out with the shots!

8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?

Some of my favorite feeds have also become some of my best friends on Instagram – people that I look forward to meeting one day, or have already met! In no particular order, and without creating a wall of text: @vorstenbos, @denimhound, @yonagrinberg, @selvedge1, @illcutz, @sennah0j (omg it took me way too long to realize it was his name backwards!), @laermkulisse (this dude made the most amazing photoshop of a bunch of denimheads to celebrate his 500th post, you should go check it out!) and @clobbercalm of course!

9. What tips would you give new starters on Instagram to help them get there feed off the ground and successful?

If you want to work your way into the community, just start posting and don’t overthink it! Don’t try to fit anyone else’s aesthetic, be yourself and your own unique identity will speak volumes. Tag the brands that you’re wearing, and use hashtags too! Be interactive, start with the InstagrammersI listed if you need help, and like photos that you like, and comment on photos that you really like. Once you get some followers, use the story feature too! It’s a lot of fun.

10. And Lucky Last, it’s a quick fire 10@10…

Raw denim or true vintage fades? Raw denim! I love starting with a crisp pair and fading them myself.
High rise or low rise? Mid-rise. Preferably with pockets deep enough to actually fit a whole cell phone…
Japan made or USA made? USA made denim will always have my heart, but lately I’ve been flirting with Japanese denim; it’s exotic, and I love how the Japanese see beauty in imperfections (wabisabi), so they’re usually the ones to come out with insane neppy/slubby fabrics.
Skinny fit or slim fit? Slim fit definitely. I like a slim silhouette, but I also like to be able to move around.
Slim straight or straight standard? I like a little taper, but sometimes a vintage fit is a nice change.
12oz or 21oz? 12oz. The highest weight denim I have is 16oz, and it feels substantial. Maybe if I didn’t live in sunny Cali I’d feel differently.
Popcorn or chips? Popcorn if it’s Kettle Corn, chips otherwise. Or do you mean french fries, because you’re english? Because in that case, chips always!
Arnie or Stallone? Oh man. GOOD ONE. Gotta give it to my man Arnold, because of Predator, Total Recall and Kindergarten Cop, but Stallone absolutely kills it in Rocky and Rambo.
Goonies or Breakfast Club? Goonies all the way. HEYYYY YOUUUUU GUYYYYYYYS!
Nirvana or Guns N’ Roses? I grew up listening to Nirvana, I was only 8 when he passed, but I remember when it happened. I was the kid with a walkman listening to tapes of Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Oasis, Violent Femmes, Cake, Rage Against the Machine etc. on the elementary school playground.

Ok so in Isaac we have an ex-skater, leather craftsman who loves; The Goonies, Arnie, Raw Denim, vintage (or should I say hunting vintage) and indigo. Plus, to top it all off he’s based over in the sun-soaked landscapes of LA. Sounds like a life worth living Isaac. You enjoy it bro, PTC deserves all the success it earns and hopefully we will achieve a few more PT3xC collaboration belt sales off the back of this awesome week we have had with you here on the 10@10.

Keep rocking brother, no doubt we will chat again very soon!

So moving on, just wanted to say thanks to all the dudes and dudettes that bought into all the @clobbercalm collabs we have been doing over the past 6 months. It’s been an absolute blast and extremely humbling to see products we have been involved with get shipped all around the world. Very awesome!

Anyway dudes have a tip-top evening and a cracking weekend and I’ll catch you all on Saturday for April’s update of @clobbercalm.threadsnfades2017. A bit of a curveball heading your way this weekend regards the project so tune in and make sure to check it out.

Stay close brothers. Stay close.

Ben @clobbercalm.
