Dudes. Wow. What a crazy busy week. It’s 11.36pm on Tuesday and I still have two blogs to write up before I can sleep and then wake up at daft o’clock with the little ones. I know this 4th Budweiser is pushing me directly towards a slippery slope but it’s sooooo fucking good…I’m twisting the cap anyways. I’ve got Diana Ross blasting through the headphones and feeling like chatting a little!
Tomorrow we soft open ‘clobber-calm supply co.’ in Kelham Island, Sheffield, England and the day after (Saturday) we have our a little shindig to celebrate! Anyways, as we have a very bloke-like weekend coming up it seems fitting that tonight we feature a female denim warrior. Yup, we got a sister from another mister spitting some blue blood opinions and fucking awesome it is too! Yup, @taylorofrailcar sat in the 10@10 hot-seat and totally ripped it up!
I love it when somebody we interview educates me on hard-ass brands and likeminded people and Taylor does just that! At a mere 20 years young this lady has a bright future in the denim community if she chooses to pursue it (fingers crossed).
Taylor, you and Steven are obviously a great team and I have no doubt you will continue to progress!
MEET THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MENSWEAR
NAME: Taylor Ashley Montoya AKA @taylorofrailcar
LOCATION: San Gabriel Valley
OCCUPATION: Railcar head sales rep, Social media manager, The Grand Station manager, Customer Service, Photographer
1. So Why Instagram?
I have always loved Instagram, you get to keep in contact with old friends, browse through interesting pictures/videos. Steven and I found that Instagram is a great tool for sharing and spreading the Railcar story around. We have made many new friends and found brands through Instagram that has helped encourage us to work harder and produce some of the best quality goods we can for you. We release sneak peeks and do updates to let everyone know what Railcar is up to next! We really love sharing our progress with everyone. (picture of Michael Masterson @ateliermasterson and I who we met through the world wide web, cutting down branches to make natural indigo dye.)
2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?
Steven and Tawny first exposed me to the whole workwear vibe a few years ago when Railcar was a much smaller. Trying on raw denim for the first time when their workshop was still in Stevens bedroom! A few years passed after that and I started working with them, falling in love with everything Railcar was about! Now I was surrounded by all these great quality goods and brands that I didn’t even know existed! I really couldn’t go back after that, I got the chance to see how the pants I was wearing was made step by step. I helped Steven cut layers of fabric that was soon going to be made into a beautiful pair of jeans!
3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?
I think seeing posts by people who genuinely love what they wear and want to share it with the rest of us is awesome! A fairly small community supporting the brands and people that make such great quality goods while the rest of the world is oblivious to what is outside of shopping centers/malls. This side of Instagram is a window for makers, denim heads, and people who just want to join in and show you how their pieces wear/fit.
4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?
Blackrock Leather N Rich @blackrockleather: Great leather care brand who’s made all their care products themselves in Tennessee since 1976. We met these guys about a year ago and they introduced us to their Leather n Rich, it changed my life I use it on all my boots and any leather goods I have. Formula is just spot on and we recommend it to anyone looking into boot care.
Red Wing @redwingheritage: Amazing brand and great people! We carry Red Wings in our shop and I got my first Round Toes when I would have to buy super small mens sizes. The whole team helps us out a lot with getting customers into the style they want. Just like denim, you break them in, see how they wear, and who doesn’t love giving their boots a nice shine?
Freeman Seattle @freemanseattle: They also produce their own garments in house and they are such a friendly team. Scott and Brittany carry Railcar in their store and we carry their goods in ours. Steven and I have always respected and thought highly of them, I love the Seattle touch and construction of their clothing.
5. Where’s your favourite place to shop these brands?
The Grand Station! I have to make time to explore more shops, Railcar is my second home, I am here all the time. The Grand Station is our sister site where we have all of the other brands we carry on display for you. The brands I love we try to bring into The Grand Station to share with all of you. I don’t do a lot of shopping anywhere else, I have everything I need here.
6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your threads on social media?
When I first starting helping in the workshop I used to see Steven document what he was doing daily, I thought what a cool way to share what Railcar is up to all the time! Posting pictures of us packing/cleaning jeans, and recording videos of Steven working on the production was so much fun! When more women’s styles started to release I thought it would be a good idea to show everyone how they fit and wear over time. This took Railcar Women’s to the next step! More and more girls were interested in getting their first pair of raws, and we were able to show and help with sizing. We share our daily life with everyone and want to spread Railcar around as much as we can.
7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?
We wanted to make sure our images captured what Railcar was all about. I take my own pictures around the shop, Steven and I both work together to shoot pictures of each other, trying to give it that real life Railcar vibe. There is not a set schedule for when we take them, it is whenever we have some spare time during the day then we go straight back to working on the floor. There is a lot to do here around here and a LOT to document, so we try to post our story daily with details about Railcar that we want to share with you. (picture is me taking a picture of Steven taking a picture of me!)
8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?
Definitely Jess @aegishandcraft -amazing Women’s motivator and love the pictures she takes and seeing the progress with her own brand.
Moto Donut @motodonut -good friend of Steven and ours love seeing his beautifully taken donut and motorcycle pictures all over town.
Michael! @bigdudeindenim– came into the shop looking for a pair of jeans that accommodates to bigger dudes and we fit him right up! Since then he has helped us with our larger sizes, given us photography advice and his feed has been very helpful to the denim community, targeting brands that make clothes in a wide range of sizes. He also has a great photography account @michaelbandyphotography.
9. What’s is like being Lady in what could be seen as a men’s world? After all you rock the Blue better than most of the blokes!!
Railcar has always made me feel like I belong. Not once have I felt out of place because there was more raw for men out there. First time stepping into the shop Steven hands me a pair of Viper X021s a women’s cut we offer, so I was brought into raws wearing a great Women’s cut because of Railcar. After coming out and showing him how they fit, he hemmed them up for me and said “wear the hell out of them!” I fell in love with my denim, the Women’s cut complimented my body well and it was still selvedge raw denim! I have a few Railcar men’s cut which I also love, we do alterations here so I was able to alter certain aspects to make the fit better.
10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island, you can take 1 outfit (4 items) and 1 drink ONLY with you.
What would they be? Who made them? Why are you taking them?
Got it! #1 My Railcar Starlet stretch because I can literally do anything, jump, bend, climb and it still holds up strong!
#2 Of course, boots Red Wing 8196, leather is tough and I know it can outlast just about anything.
#3 Velva Sheen heavy weight tees. Velva Sheen makes really nice quality heavy weight tees that will hold up great if I am stranded on a desert island.
#4 Railcar Chore Coat, I love this coat! Canvas that can be water-proof with wax. Can withhold the rain, wind, and any type of weather that island throws at me, at least I know I have my trusty chore to keep me warm.
One drink?! I would have to go with a blueberry pineapple milkshake because those make me the happiest.
What a cracking insight there Taylor, you’ve smashed it!
Great choice on the Railcar Chore Coat, it’s a thing of beauty. I am also going to have to try the “blueberry pineapple milkshake” because it sounds fantastic.
With our stores soft opening tomorrow, we are also going to have an extra special ‘Story So Far’ blog showing the final bits and pieces of how the shop is progressing.
Hope you enjoyed the read, see you tomorrow folks!
Stay close people.
