Hello people.

How's it going folks? Hopefully all good...

So, back in January me and Ben had the pleasure of visiting Selvedge Run, in Berlin. I think you've all heard, by now, that we had an awesome time and that wasn't just down to the parties, bratwurst and beer (maybe a tad down to that 😬). No, it was the mega brands + people that we met along the way. Most of which we shared a beer with, anyways, love to multitask, me and Woodsy!

Tonight is the first of the interviews we conducted whilst there and features @redwingshoes & @simmonsbilt. We are going to be posting all of the interviews every day this week, up to Sunday, before Shane aka Mr. Selvedge Run takes a seat at the clobber-cast table next week. So, read on people and enjoy!

So, what's your name, your role within Red Wing and what does a normal day look like for you?

My name is Dominic, I'm 44 years old, I’m Swiss and I work for Red Wing Heritage in Europe. My role is titled as Retail Manager Europe, so technically I look after all our own retail stores in Europe. Side project is I also look after all the accessories, so non footwear items, make sure that collection is on time and all the items are where they are supposed to be. On a normal day I help the Red Wing Shoe stores sell as many boots as possible, answer emails and get deliveries in.

Good stuff I like it. What's your favourite pair of Red Wings?

I’m torn, but I would have to go with Moc Toe 875 all-time classic is probably the boot I wear most. Plus the one I’m wearing at the moment, Blacksmith in Hawthorne muleskinner leather. Those two are heavy rotation, everything else is kind of sprinkled in.

So, do you enjoy the trade shows? What do you get from them and what do you hope to achieve?

Yes and no. I think it’s very important for me, not just professionally but personally, you know, you have some friends in the industry that you only get to see here at these occasions and I enjoy that side of it. Of course there are some things that are not as enjoyable, like being in one spot, inside for 3 days, you eat too much, you sleep too little, you drink too much, that will be the down side. The actual being here and talking to people I enjoy. It’s an important bit of what we do.

Tell us about Autumn/Winter for you guys?

There are a couple of things that are quite exceptional, one is that we're introducing a basically a new product line. A collection which is a 6” boot in an Oxford and it's a full leather outsole on a cork sole, which is a sole we introduced I the 40’s, So far it has been used exclusively on the Japanese collection so it’s something we are putting in line for the first time in Europe, so that's a big deal. It’s thinner leather so it's less difficult to break in and it's the only shoe we have that is fully leather lined, so it's also a new last, a shape that looks like nothing else, we are very proud of it, it’s a big deal for us. The rest is just colour updates or leather updates on models that you already know. There's a black Prairie which is a unique leather because it's not fully struck through. In a normal Red Wing boot the leather is fully died through, so it’s black from the outside and also on the inside. The scars will be the same colour as the boot, with this all the wrinkles and scars the brown pushes through. A non struck through Prairie leather, this is going to do well. Then there is stuff like a navy on a moc toe, a new rover colour, but those are just are just colour updates.

Finally mate, you're trapped on a desert island and you can take 4 items of clothing and 1 drink, what're you taking with you?

So I’m bringing two boots, two Red Wing boots because you need to let your boots rest a while so you can't just have one boot. I’m bringing the 875 and the Blacksmith, my two favorites. I have a Tellason Fatigue Pant in olive, which is my fave, I’m not wearing them today but 9 out of 10 days I am. Then just some chequered shirt I guess, it’s not very fancy. My drink would be coffee for sure, I can't live without coffee.

Do you work on the production line, do you work on new designs and how many of you is there?

Production, designs, sampling, pretty much an overview of everything tbh. There are just 10 in the company, we are looking to take on some trainee staff in the next 3/4 months.

So you take on machinists, I suppose?

Yeah we take them on as trainees and it takes a while to train them, possibly 12 months to a few years to fully train somebody.

How did you get your skill?

I’ve been doing it about 25 years, I worked for another leather jacket company.

At the moment, what is your favourite item?

At the moment it's the Type D-1 Redskin, perfect in the cold weather that's 15mm sheepskin all you need it a t-shirt on under that in this weather. Through the summer the Type A-2.

When travelling, do you do many trade shows?

No, we just do Selvedge Run twice a year.

Is it just good to see existing customers and pick up a few new ones?

Mainly it’s to see existing customers, we always pick up new customers and we always have our collaborative partners here as well so it's ideal for all scenarios.

So you mentioned that you ship abroad, I guess an event like this allows you to see, say, your Japanese customers?

Exactly, they fly in from all over the world so it's perfect for us, rather then travelling about and seeing each person individually.

You mentioned collaborations, can you tell us about any of them that you've got coming up?

We are in the middle of a collaboration with 3Sixteen and Standard & Strange. We’ve got a collaboration with Nigel Cabourn for 2018, this is the third year or maybe the fourth year. Then there is Mica from Fleurs de BagneWe are making his French Canadian out of old 1940s dead stock.

That’s pretty cool, I was going to ask if you get dead stock leather?

No it’s just fabric that one of the mills he works with, it was found at the back of the storerooms, it’s beautiful fabric.

Finally mate, you're trapped on a desert island and you can take 4 items of clothing and 1 drink, what're you taking with you?

First and foremost, Gin and Tonic. Obviously a leather jacket...’s a desert island so it’s going to be hot, I’d take my A-2, a nice t-shirt and denim jeans. That’s all you need!
