NAME: Jeffry Lek AKA @thehaguedenim

1. So Why Instagram?

IG is an ideal platform to share and connect with other enthusiast real easy. You can see how others are doin’ but just as easy you can DM for more info. It’s all about fun and connection for me. But that algorithm?

2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?

I’ve had all sorts of looks but workwear is one that fitted like a glove. It’s easy to wear, authentic and often made with great love by the most creative people. So not only workwear but small badged and handmade. Boots, do they really need explanation? I can hike for a couple of miles one day and the other I can attend a meeting with the same boots and in both occasions they do the trick. I’m kind if a raw denim virgin, always liked it from the sideline but never had the guts to step in. Till last September after reading and informing myself, the guys at baretta gave the last push! After a meet up with @edwin028 the spark really ignited. Never regret it for a day. It’s a whole different ballgame and I’m thrilled to see where my denim takes me.

3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?

I like the idea that people from all over the world connect and zoom in on their favorite subject. The most of us like fashion and denim but you can find on any subject a subculture. Instagram makes it easier to be part of that community for me compared to Facebook, there’s are no groups of rules to be followed. You can create your own content and follow the ones you love and get inspired by without any difficulty.

4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?

@benzakdenimdevelopers It was the first denim I bought and all that was promised was delivered. The details, the quality and the awesomeness are all insane. It’s dutch and also has a great collection sweaters and shirts, need to say more?

@leejeanseurope Just love the fact that a brand is able to survived so many trend changes and still is true to it’s own background. Love the material and roughness.

@bensonbluelegs One of my favorites without owning a single piece of his work. Just love the creativity and the fact that all of his clothes are handmade in Holland. As soon as I can, I’m gonna visit his workshop and finally get myself some ;-)

5. Where’s your favorite place to shop these brands?

Born and raised in The Hague, there’s only one answer I can give. @barettajeans of course! Great advice, great guys and great products! A most go to when you’re visiting The Hague. Also in The Hague is @funkie_house, their the best in shirts and jackets for me. I’m not a huge online shopper, I want to feel the fabric and fit. I use online shops for inspiration and @cultizm is one of my favorites because of the wide range of products.

6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your threads on social media?

My instagram account is relatively new, before I only had a personal feed. With my first dry denim, a benzak BDD-006 special #1 low tension 14oz bought at @barettajeans, @thehaguedenim was born. Mainly to read and see tips and tricks from other denim heads. With the start of the benzak contest it began to grow a lot more.

7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?

Oh that’s a tricky one, because I really have no idea. Maybe it’s the natural look, maybe the combination with the beard and ink. I show outfits I wear on a daily basis. At first I made my own photo’s but nowadays I have the pleasure to work with a couple of great en creative photographers. Fleur (@fleur_photographer) is a student at the art academy in The Hague, she makes most of my pictures. Marnix (@marnix_photographer) is my friend, we work in the same company and recently we both graduated as master of science. Last is Julie (@jvdm89) and she’s my sister in law, recently we did our first shoot together!

8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?

Yeah right, how can I give a answer to this one? There are so many great and inspiring feeds out there, I love @clobbercalm (no brainer), @dutchdenimrepair, @sel.vage, @robindenim, @koenkuik, @sennah0j, @boothunter and @nico.mantzke. I can get really motivated to see what content they create and what pieces they wear. You should definitely check out @rakeshnejal, @hellequino, @myself_and_denim and @denim_collective.

9. What tips would you give new starters on Instagram to help them get their feed off the ground, and successful?

Don’t do it, it’s horrible! No, I guess the only advice I can give is have fun with what you do. Don’t be something your not. Don’t do it for likes, followers or any other reason then doing what you like yourself.

10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) Only and 1 x drink with you. What would they be? Who made them? And Why?

My redwing iron rangers 8111 amber harness, they outlive me and are up to the job. I’ll take my benzak denim developers B-01 15oz. Kojima selvedge contest jeans x robindenim x cultizm on my journey. For a tee I’ll pack a @hemen_biarritz shirt with me, great quality and nice colours. And of course my @hellequino 11oz jacket to keep me warm at night.

My friend Jasper brews his own beer in The Hague together with his lovely wife Louise, so for a drink I’ll take a @eiber_denhaag beer.
