MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE MENSWEAR

NAME: Jesus Salgado AKA @vedgesus
AGE: 27
LOCATION: East Los Angeles
OCCUPATION: Hospital Warehouse/Inventory Clerk

1. So Why Instagram?

Instagram was actually how I got into the heritage/workwear style. I remember seeing a member from a band I used to follow post a picture in which he was wearing Red Wing Beckman’s and telling myself I had to get myself a pair! I eventually ordered two pairs of Beckman’s and started following boot related accounts. I then stumbled across the world of raw denim and was quickly enamored with everything attached to it which then lead to “hey! I can definitely post stuff like this too!” Instagram has also been a great way to connect with people across the globe that are into this style, it’s opened up a new world for me.

2. Why Denim, Boots, Workwear, Ruggedness?

After buying my first pair of Red Wing Beckman boots and was then introduced to this style, I realized that’s what I wanted to be about. I wanted to buy good clothes that would last me a long time and look good in the process. I had always envisioned something along the lines of the heritage/workwear style but didn’t know it was actually something that existed, especially the community that came with it. Also, boots are just so damn nice! Lastly, I’d say this style was definitely something that caught my eye because none of my friends were into it and I always try to find myself in something new and unknown to me.

3. What are your thoughts on the rise in popularity of “Instafashion” and the community it is creating?

I think it’s amazing! I can definitely appreciate more and more people diving into this world. It’s also a great way to see how someone else can piece together an outfit and get ideas from it. I always find myself being inspired through someone else’s outfit post. Also, the community it has created is an amazing one. I have met a lot of down to earth, genuine individuals I can now call friends. Everyone I have met in either person or a simple DM (direct message) has been great to talk to. I hope it continues to grow.

4. Top 3 brands to shop and why?

First brand I would have to mention is 3sixteen. The first denim I ever got was from them (because they make bigger sizes, I am also a bigger guy in the world of denim and boots). I can say that mostly everything in my closet is 3sixteen. Second brand would be Railcar Fine Goods. Everything is made in their shop and it is all made extremely well in my opinion. I own three pairs of denim and two pairs of flight trousers, they are definitely some of my favorites. Third brand would be a boot brand and I’d have to go with Truman Boot Company. I own several different brands of boots but Truman stands out because they are built well and beautiful. I recently ordered a couple of them and now can’t get them off my feet. (Honorable mention) I would have to say Freenote Cloth. Their shop is awesome and I enjoy going over even if it is just to hang out. The stuff they also come out with is awesome!

5. Where’s your favorite place to shop these brands?

For the first two brands I go directly to their stores and buy the goods there. Being able to interact with them is also satisfying. Andrew, Johan (3sixteen) and Steven (Railcar) are all super cool people as well. For Truman I have bought online through different websites, I hope to visit the shop soon and hopefully buy another pair from them.

6. When did you decide to voice and share your love for your threads on social media?

I first started posting outfit pictures around March of last year (2017). It took me a little longer to start because at first I was shy about it and my only followers were friends from high school and some family members. I still get the usual “are you a model” message so now I just tell everyone I pretend to be one on the weekends.

7. What’s the secret behind your great images; Who takes them? When are they taken? How do you capture the magic your followers enjoy so much?

Really it depends on whoever is near me with a camera or a really good camera on their smartphone. For the most part it’s either my closest friend Frank (@japanese_buffalo) or the awesome Mike (@bigdudeindenim) when we have a LA Denim Hang! We usually get together to go shooting on the weekends but whenever I post a picture during the week, it is my brother taking the picture. I try to think outside the box and come up with some weird questionable outfits sometimes and they usually work! (at least I think they do)

8. What feeds do you like to follow and check in on? Who should we check out?

There are too many great accounts I could mention on here so I’ll just go ahead and say anyone that I am following! But be sure to check out @ladenimhangs and all of the members!

9. What tips would you give new starters on Instagram to help them get their feed off the ground, and successful?

Be genuine and reach out to people in the community, from my experience everyone is super nice.

10. And Lucky Last, You’re going to be stranded on a desert island and you can take 1 outfit (4 items) Only and 1 x drink with you. What would they be? Who made them? And Why?

Right away I can say I’d need my 3sixteen Indigo Moleskin Shop Jacket, I love that thing. Second, my Railcar Spike X026’s because they are so good and I’ve had them for the longest. Third, any of my Lady White pocket tees, they are perfect for all seasons. Lastly, it would have to be my pair of Red Wing Iron Ranger in Hawthorne Muleskinner. I personally think they go well with just about anything. What drink would I pick? This is a hard one but I’d have to go with a glass of Stranahan’s whiskey (it’s from Colorado).
